DOESN'T WORK YET IN 1.16.2+! MUST BE USED IN 1.16.1!

STAY TUNED FOR VERSION 2.0, WHICH'LL ADD SUPPORT FOR 1.16.2+, ALONG WITH CUSTOM BIOMES, BETTER ISLAND GENERATION, AND STRUCTURES!

NOTE: THIS DATAPACK HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED AND WON'T RECEIVE ANY NEW UPDATES FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE

Ever since 1.16 Pre-release 1, when they added custom dimensions through datapacks, I've been working on Poor Man's Aether, which adds an entirely new Aether-like dimension to the game!

Make a portal frame out of glowstone and activate it with a water bucket, then you'll be on your way. Of course, since this is just a datapack and not a full-fledged mod, I was pretty limited in what I could do, but I tried to add as many cool features as I could. Below is everything you need to know about the Aether:

Main features of the Aether
  • Made up entirely of floating islands
  • All passive and hostile mobs can FLY!
  • Use a saddle on a flying pig and you'll be able to control it with a Carrot on a Stick, giving you an easy way to traverse the Aether, similar to Striders in the Nether.
  • For the "Big 4" animals (pigs, sheep, cows, chickens), there's a 1/10 chance of them spawning with a baby animal riding on their back, which is another similarity to the Striders.
  • Fall into the void, below Y=-64, and you end up back in the Overworld, at Y=2044. If you manage you go to Y=2048, you'll end up in the Aether again at Y=-60. The Aether and the End are also connected the same way.
  • The default block in the Aether is snow (in the Overworld it's stone and in the Nether it's netherrack). This gives the islands the appearance of clouds floating in the sky.
  • All rabbits in the Aether have the Toast skin (rest in peace).
  • The Aether is definitely not the place to mine, as not many ores can be found there. Instead, it's a place to explore rare biomes that would be harder to find back in the Overworld. The Aether contains these biomes: Sunflower plains, Flower forest, Snowy tundra, Ice spikes, Tall birch forest, Mushroom fields, Eroded badlands, Bamboo jungle, Savanna, and Giant tree taiga.
  • The biomes generate in a checkerboard pattern. They're shaped like squares and repeat along the diagonals, making all of them equally easy to find.

New advancements
  • You Light Up My World: Obtain glowstone
  • We Need to Go Higher: Enter the Aether
  • Did It Hurt?: Fall from the Aether (a reference to the cliche pick up line: "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?")
  • Free Market: Trade with a Sky Villager
  • This Boat Can Fly: Ride a Sky Pig with a Carrot on a Stick
  • Sky Traveler: Explore all Aether biomes
  • ... More to come soon

Things to keep in mind
  • Due to a Minecraft bug, beds won't work in the Aether even though they're supposed to. They don't explode; they just don't work. However, respawn anchors work perfectly fine.
  • Ignore the pollen dripping from all the flying mobs. That's from the invisible, indestructible bee they're riding on.
  • If you kill a mob, the invisible bee will also die so as to not clog up the entity count.
  • As the night continues, more and more hostile mobs will gain the ability to fly. Your game will also get laggier and laggier. I tried to prevent the lag as much as possible, but for now, try to avoid being in the Aether at nighttime.
  • Destroying an Aether portal: Breaking one of the glowstone blocks in the frame in Survival mode will destroy the portal. If the portal had already been used at least once before, you'll also hear a special sound to signal that the corresponding portal on the other side is no longer linked. If the portal wasn't linked to begin with, you'll only hear the glowstone breaking and not the special sound. Also, make sure you're standing close to the portal when you break it.
  • Once you put a saddle on a flying pig, that pig will never move again except for when you're riding it. I tried to make it so that the pig could still move around on its own, but due to a Minecraft bug (which'll hopefully be fixed soon), I couldn't do it.
  • While you can still ride flying horses, you won't be able to control them. Similarly, you can tame flying wolves and cats, but they won't follow you. Flying passive mobs like pigs, cows, etc. will still follow you if you're holding wheat or carrots.
  • No blocks burn infinitely in the Aether, not even netherrack or magma.
  • It's recommended, though not strictly necessary, to go into "data/minecraft/dimension/pma/the_aether.json" and change both of the values called "seed". By default, they're set to 0, though you can change them to any number you want to (it has to be a number). Unfortunately, Minecraft doesn't let custom dimensions generate with a random seed, and it forces you to specify a seed in the dimension file. To prevent all Aethers from looking the same, it's recommended to change the seeds.
  • Due to yet another Minecraft bug, you have to re-log (singleplayer) or restart (servers) for it to recognize the new dimension. /reload won't work.
  • If allow-flight is turned off for a server, Minecraft will automatically kick you for riding a sky pig because it'll think you're illegally flying. So if you wanna ride sky pigs, turn allow-flight on.

While this datapack does have quite a few features, there are still many things I'd like to add in the future. Some of these things include ways to reduce lag at nighttime, more advancements, and the most exciting: custom structures. If anyone would like to help make custom structures exclusive to the Aether, I'd love it. I'm not much of a builder so I don't think I'd be able to do it myself, at least not easily. Mojang also recently added support for custom biomes, so I'm definitely gonna be creating those too.

Anyway, enjoy the Aether!

Wait, there was a "_MACOSX" folder in the zip? I could've sworn I removed that. Anyway, it's not important.

It doesn't generate the custom dimension in 1.16.3, just creates another portal some blocks away from first portal in Overworld

It doesn't work in versions above 1.16.1 yet. I'm working on a new update that'll add support for 1.16.2+, along with some new Aether-exclusive custom biomes

Does the server use Spigot? Because Spigot doesn't support Minecraft's custom dimensions

I'm having the same problem as Sithoid, but I don't think the problem is caused by the same thing. When I create a world using the extracted file "Poor Man's Aether" (there is another file called _MACOSX but it doesn't register as a datapack) the dimension is not added. The advancements work, and I can make a portal completely fine, but because it didn't add the Aether dimension it just puts the exit portal in the overworld. Is there something I am doing wrong when it comes to the world creation process? I am currently using v20w29a if that matters.
