Required Resource Pack
16
Want a fresh new challenge in your survival worlds?
Rego's Overhauled Illagers (named "Smart Patrols" in the pack files) reworks the spawn mechanics and behavior of Illagers, improving upon the existing Pillager Patrols in the vanilla game and modifying their A.I. to be much more dynamic in nature.
Download the .zip and you will find the main pack as well as two extensions: one which adds custom items, and the other which adds Boss Illagers!
Additional Resources
Found on this page is a resource pack that I strongly recommend you use while running this data pack. As of the full-release patch (11/19/2023), this resource pack utilizes Random Entities and Custom Entity Models. As such, Optifine or any mod that adds these features standalone is highly recommended, especially if you would like to see all of the pack's modifications. Without these mods installed, Illagers will not spawn with randomized appearances or have the appropriate texture applied if they are Elementals or Bosses, and due to the core data pack's Navigation Assistance mechanic for custom Illager navigation, you may also see flashes of Wandering Traders appear and vanish in combat; however, the rest of the pack will still work.
As you've read already, the .zip file also contains two extensions to the main data pack. The first one adds custom items and enchantments that function as rewards for exploring and hunting down patrols. Some of these new items are dropped by the Illagers upon death; many of them are found within Pillager Outposts and Woodland Mansions. For a list of features in this extension, see the bottom of this page. The second one adds Illager Bosses which will initially only appear during high-level Raids, but eventually they will begin to spawn in regular patrols. Currently, there are 4 bosses; more will be added in the future.
Please note that you must have the main pack running in order to run the extensions; they will not work standalone.
Performance
As development of this project continues, there will be changes made to optimize performance for this somewhat resource-intensive data pack. When running the main data pack, there are heaps of commands running every tick; it can climb up to the hundreds when there are patrols actively roaming the world. These commands are necessary for the patrols to display their enhanced behavior. Consequently, you may need a pretty decent computer to run the pack. If you are hosting this in multiplayer, having an excellent connection and server would be ideal.
How The Main Pack Affects Vanilla
The goal of this pack is to give survival MInecraft a different experience, one that keeps you on your toes and where you are never truly safe from the Illagers, even if you think you might have formed an alliance. As such, the game flow can vary from feeling relatively peaceful to nonstop (albeit controlled!) action. With this comes some changes to a few Vanilla gameplay mechanics:
- Pillager Patrols have been completely replaced. The new patrols do not carry Ominous Banners, which means killing their leaders will not grant Bad Omen.
- Bad Omen is instead gained when a Patrol Leader (which can be identified by their unique banner designs) retreats from the player once they have either 1) Traded with a villager; 2) Slept in a bed within a village's boundaries; 3) Defeated an Illager within a village's boundaries. Allowing a leader to retreat while having a Bad Omen effect will increment its level, all the way up to level V.
- By default, Wandering Traders will be disabled, and instead they are replaced with a new Wandering Pillager. This can be changed in the datapack's settings. You can access the settings from the menu that loads into the chat each time you log into your world; you can also display the menu anytime by executing the command, /trigger help. (Note: You will need OP permissions to change settings. In SP, you can grant yourself this permission by opening your world to LAN, then configuring cheats to "allowed.")
- Raids still work as they do in Vanilla for the most part. However, because of the Illagers' new combat AI, raid farms may break.
- If a raid was triggered by a player with a Bad Omen level higher than I, the final wave will be a boss wave (see patch notes for version 1.2).
- Illagers can cause mild griefing by building effigies at your base. This can be disabled in the settings menu.
- Illagers will periodically place banners near natural or player-made villages. This can also be disabled in the settings menu.
Constructive feedback and suggestions are always welcome. The pack will continue to receive updates down the line, so things are bound to change.

So what does the custom item extension add?
Glad you asked! The primary purpose of the extension is to add an incentive for exploring and hunting down patrols. As the Illagers will populate your world and they are rather curious in nature, you will at one point or another have to kill them. They will remember any hostile encounters and may send additional patrols to your base. With time, you may kill dozens, maybe hundreds of Illagers. To ensure the task doesn't feel like a chore and instead feels rewarding, this add-on to the main pack adds the following:
- A new Skull Bomb throwable. Crafted using a skeleton skull and one block of TNT, this new item acts as a throwable time bomb. Amass a collection of skulls by smelting the heads of fallen Illagers - no need for a Charged Creeper powered head farm!
- A new item series called Charms, which grant the user special abilities and cannot be crafted.
- A new item series of Incense has been added in update 1.1.0. Explore Pillager Outposts or barter with Witches to build a supply of the base ingredient, Incense Base. From there, forage flowers or experiment with certain rare mob drops to create Powdered Incense, and use your creation with a lit Illager effigy to construct an early-game beacon! For full details, see the patch notes for 1.1.0.
- New enchantment: Velocity. Comprising three levels, this Crossbow enchantment increases the speed (and thereby, increases damage) of your arrows. This is obtainable from Pillagers, which will begin spawning with Velocity Crossbows after beating the game (i.e. seeing the credits) when Endgame Patrols are enabled, or when the player acquires a strong enough set of armor.
- New enchantment: Summon. This is a goat horn enchantment only obtainable from Illager Leaders or Pillager Outposts. When a horn enchanted with Summon is used, all sitting pets within a radius will automatically stand; its intended use is for calling wolves to aid you in combat, but this also works for cats and parrots. Each level increases the effective radius, with level IV being the highest at 52 blocks.
- New enchantment: Boon. This is a goat horn enchantment only obtainable from Illager Leaders or Pillager Outposts. When a horn enchanted with Boon is used, all wolves, cats, parrots, and villagers within a small radius will begin regenerating health. Each level increases the effectiveness of the regen, with level III being the strongest.
- New enchantment: Resonance. This is a goat horn enchantment only obtainable from Illager Leaders or Pillager Outposts. When a horn enchanted with Resonance is used, all Illagers within a 32/64/128 block radius, depending on level, will be highlighted.
Moreover, I believe many of us can agree on one thing: Woodland Mansions in the vanilla game have underwhelming loot. Prior to the addition of Illager raids, they were the only place to find Totems of Undying; now that these are renewable, there isn't much point in visiting these rare structures. For such an enormous structure potentially rich with lore implications, it is a shame that mansions are seldom sought after. Because of this, I took the liberty of making a couple of tweaks: Woodland Mansions not only have better loot, but they are now home to four new exclusive enchantments and three Rare Active Charms. With these additions, the trouble of finding and fighting through a mansion will hopefully be worthwhile. More items are planned to be added in the future, so stay tuned!

What about the custom bosses?
Version 1.2.0 introduced a new datapack extension which adds four original Illager bosses that spawn initially during raids. To support this change, the main pack also introduced a change to raids: when the player triggers a raid of Bad Omen II or higher, the final wave becomes a boss wave, an event which has a chance to pit you against one of these four bosses (provided that the boss datapack is enabled). As difficulty scales over time, raids can throw in multiple bosses at a time, and bosses may even spawn in patrols!
The four bosses are as follows:
- Master Arbalist: A seasoned Raid Veteran, this high-ranking Pillager can fire clusters of arrows in rapid succession and launch flurries of
firework rockets at his enemies.
- Harvester: The Demon of the Ether has a penchant for claiming souls to later weaponize them. His vast collection of damned souls can be
summoned at will to launch a deadly Soul Volley, and he has mastered the use of Vexes such that lower-ranking Evokers aspire to reach the
Harvester's level.
- Perfected Witch: The Grizzled Enchantress has many tricks up her rotting sleeve. Decades of perfecting witchcraft have eaten away at her
body and mind, but to be an asset to the clan entails sacrifice and complete devotion.
- Evokerlord: The lowest of all evils, the most feared member of the Illager clan, the Grandest Castaway has mastered the arts of the
Darkness and will stop at nothing to enact revenge against those who rejected him.
With the Custom Items extension enabled, defeating any of these bosses will guarantee Its Blessing and one random uncommon passive charm--or in the Evokerlord's case, there is a 15% chance that he will drop a level-30 enchanted book instead.

Known Issues
No data pack is perfect, and as such there will always be bugs in each version. Here is a list of (currently) known ones:
- Lead Illagers offering truces to the player may sometimes place their interactable banner in a weird manner.
- Reinforced Crossbow may not function as intended until you fire it for the first time.
- Killing Shulkers doesn't proc certain on-kill charms.
- 'Its Blessing' and 'It's Blessing, Luminous' causes lag if stacked on the same armor items too many times. (fixed in v1.3.1)
- 'Omen of Finality (red)' doesn't always proc after slaying an Illager. (fixed in v1.3.1)
- Lead Vindicators may still attack players after offering a truce. (fixed in v1.2.4)

Planned Changes (NEW!)
For the next content patch (v1.4.0):
- Java Edition 1.21.5 compatibility - Progress toward updating the main pack to the (current) latest Java Edition is being made and will be ready for use by patch 1.4.0. It will be included at the top of this page as a separate download link on release.
- Removal of Cataclysm Events and repurposing the Witch Harbinger.
- A new datapack extension that adds original Illager variants.
- New charms in custom item pack.
- Balance changes to Illagers all across the board.
In the foreseeable future:
- Patrols wandering in the Nether and sometimes stepping out of player-made Nether portals.
- Patrols spawning in caves and underground structures.
Still on the drawing board:
- Custom structures.

Update 5/4/2025 - v1.3.1 : by RegoMortem 05/04/2025 11:28:38 amMay 4 @ 3:28 pm UTC
Changes in v1.3.1
-- MAIN PACK --
Additions:
- New toggleable settings:
- Toggle Elementals in patrols: Allow/disallow spawning of Elemental Illagers in patrols. Note: Elementals will still spawn in raids
regardless of configuration.
- Toggle Boss Illagers in patrols: Allow/disallow spawning of bosses in patrols. Has no effect if the boss datapack extension is not
enabled. Note: Bosses will still spawn in raids regardless of configuration.
Changes:
- Illagers will now listen out for player movement.
-- EXTENSION - CUSTOM ITEMS --
Fixes:
- Resolved some cases where Omen of Finality (red) wouldn't proc after killing an Illager.
- Fixed Omen of Finality (white)'s on-kill effect not working.
- 'Its Blessing' and 'Its Blessing, Luminous' can no longer be "stacked" on armor. "Stacking" these charms did not further increase the armor's stats, but the attribute modifiers would still be stored in the item, resulting in lag due to large amounts of useless NBT data.
-- EXTENSION - BOSS PACK --
Changes:
- Evokerlord will now apply Instant Health II and Regeneration alongside its random buff to nearby allies.
Fixes:
- Fixed an issue where multiple instances of Harvester and Evokerlord attacks can happen in the same tick.
