This data pack causes slimes to drink milk from milk buckets dropped by the player, which causes the slime to increase in size. Fed slimes become persistent, and the slimes that spawn from them when they die are also persistent, which allows the player to farm slimes in a similar fashion to passive mobs.

New in Version 5: Magma Cubes can also be grown, but they prefer to drink Mushroom Stew.

By default slimes can grow to a maximum size of 3 (the largest size they naturally spawn as), and there is a 5 minute cooldown period after feeding them, during which they cannot grow again (the same time as breeding passive mobs). If you'd like to change that, you can find the configuration file at "data\slime_b\functions\config.mcfunction" within the zip file of the data pack.

Could you make it so that magma cubes eat lava buckets? That makes a lot more sense than Mushroom Stew.

If lava was renewable, I would, but as it stands mushrooms spawn in the nether, so I think it's okay to assume magma cubes probably eat them and therefore mushrooms stew is an okay food for them.

Sorry, those aren't things I can do with data packs.

You could use teams, but that would clash with any other datapack/map that uses teams.
Entities won't attack teammates.

That wouldn't make them pets, and then they wouldn't follow the player around either, so I don't really consider it a solution, but thanks for the suggestion.

So I downloaded this and I want to change the max size of slimes so that they can just increase in size till let's say 50. I changed the config file you mention but then when i reload it doesn't work. How do i edit the datapack?

Thanks for your interest in the data pack! Make sure that the number you are changing is at the end of the "scoreboard players set maxSize sb.dummy 3" (which is what the default config file lists). Also be aware that feeding a slime has a cooldown of about 5 minutes (just like the other breedable animals in MC), so it'll take a while before the slime is ready to eat again, and size 50 may take a while. If you'd like to speed that up, you can change the feeding cool down period from 6000 ticks to something smaller by changing the number at the end of the "scoreboard players set cooldown sb.dummy 6000" line.

I'm surprised that you didn't make magma cubes increase in size by consuming lava buckets

While it would make a lot of sense to use lava buckets from a thematic point of view, they're not renewable, and the farming that this data pack enables is intended to be renewable ;)

I get that. Lava isn't infinite. But it is really, really plentiful in the nether.

That is very true, but I imagine using mushroom stew to be better than lava for a number of reasons;
  • Flowing liquids are laggy, and 1 bucket of lava to grow one magma cube would result in a lot of draining the nether lava ocean, thus a lot of flowing liquids left in place

  • In a sky block map, lava might not be guaranteed in large quantities

  • Because of the 1:1 ratio of food to cube, I think its more practical to set up a farm with, say, a mooshroom and a slime pit, rather than having to truck lava from the ocean to your farm constantly.

can you make a "second version" where the slimes and magma cubes do not deal damage? or mabye you caould hold a certain item and they will not attack you?

Sorry, I wasn't able to alter the slimes and magma cubes to do no damage. You can still breed them from a distance though, for example, by keeping your pet slimes in a pit, they'll still drink the milk once it drops onto a block near them.

I'm not sure it can be done in a way that doesn't disrupt other gameplay, but I'll look into it for you. No promises.

I'm not sure what is and isn't possible since I've only lightly dabbled in data packs but could you have it apply a permanent high level weakness effect to slimes that you feed when it makes them grow? They would still hop into you but if the weakness works then they wouldn't deal damage, or at least not very much damage.

You're right that it would stop them doing damage, but it wouldn't stop them attacking you and knocking you around.

True but tiny slimes already act that way, maybe that's just how slimes show love for their owner :P
