Ever since the Soul Lantern was added to the game, I've wanted to make a lantern wisp. The idea has grown since then, but at its core is that little wisp that makes your world feel just a bit more magical.

Soul Poes (aka soul lantern wisps) playfully wander the Soul Sand Valleys. They are friendly most of the time, but stay too close for too long and eventually it will either try to strike you with the wither effect or a harmless pretend attack. Killing one drops 0-3 coal. Additionally, its body will fall to the ground and shatter like a splash potion giving up to ten seconds of speed; if the lantern is glowing, it's upgraded to speed II. If you watch closely, you'll notice them skimming the surface kicking up souls.

Skeletal Poes are skeletons with a soul lantern embedded in their ribcage. This provides the skeleton with extra speed. Additionally, if the skeleton gets the glowing effect then it will get absorbed by the lantern, which helps with identifying them. When killed, the lantern falls to the ground shattering and giving up to ten seconds of the speed effect (speed II if it's glowing when it breaks). If a fortress extends into a soul sand valley, the wither skeletons can spawn as a wither variant of skeletal poes.

Mineshaft Poes are normal lantern wisps found in mineshafts. They are a passive mob that often hangs from the ceiling like a lantern. If you have Optifine then the mob is a dynamic light source. If you kill it then the lantern will fall to the ground and shatter providing a small amount of healing. It is affected by glowing in the same way Soul Poes are. (More challenge will be added to mineshafts in the future)

The mob is an item, so you can change what it looks like by adding a custom model for items using this id number. Also applies to the lantern in the ribcage of the skeletal poes.

Do they spawn enough? Too much? Should they be closer to the ground? Is there something I should change to make it more farmable? Tell me below!

v2.3.0 The Mineshaft Poe : by Galdeveer 11/21/2022 6:47:00 pmNov 21st

The mineshaft poe uses the normal lantern texture and can often be found hanging from the ceiling like a lantern in mineshafts. It is a passive mob and if you get too close it will try to escape. It is affected by the glowing effect in the same way that soul poes are. If you kill it then it will fall to the ground and shatter giving a small amount of healing. This will be useful for future updates where mineshafts will be updated further.

If you have optifine or another mod that handles dynamic lighting then the mineshaft poe will act as a dynamic light source.

I really like the idea and execution of this data pack, and I think it makes a great addition to vanilla Minecraft. I think one interesting idea to consider adding to this data pack is the use of the wisp like a dynamic light source making use of placing and breaking a light block in one function (in theory). This could be utilized by befriending a wisp by some method (potentially a weakness potion?) and attaching it to a lead. One last idea is to give Skeletal Poes speed I/II to mimic the death game mechanic. Overall I think that this is a great and creative data pack that makes the nether a bit more interesting.

Whoops. Had to delete my previous reply. I thought I had made it so it was already a dynamic light source with optifine, but now I remember there were some issues with that which prevented it from working.

The reason I don't want to make it a dynamic light source is primarily lag. Placing and removing blocks frequently can cause a fair amount of extra lag and I designed this pack to not have too much performance overhead.

I might consider the speed boost next time I work on this.

I like this, but adding some utility other than speed would be nice. What about being able to pull souls out of mobs making them hold still or some way to get items out of soul sand?

I don't think I'd add it directly to this pack, but I'd consider making a separate pack that could be used with it. I had similar thoughts for soul fishing back when I was thinking of ideas for a fishing-based datapack contest. The fishing bobber kinda sinks into the soul sand so I thought it would be sort of intuitive. Had considered at one point a fishing rod enchantment called soul snag. Probably would need to restrict it to only working if the mob is at exactly half a heart, but I could see that being a fun way to get mob statues. I don't know if I'll ever do anything like this but it's on my radar.

Seems like a really fun pack!
Definitely reminds me of Twilight Princess, love the idea, and the execution looks good!

Haven't tried it out cause I haven't played Minecraft in ages, but hey! Definitely looks like a promising lil pack!
