Sulfuric Caving is a datapack that adds new features to Minecraft's caves, all centring around the element sulfur.
Sulfuric Caving adds:
  • Gas leaks which spawn in overworld caves below y=50, and anywhere in the nether.
  • Fools gold ore, which will drop from iron and gold ore randomly at different rates.
  • My custom NBT Smelting library, place item frames on furnaces to activate.
  • Fools gold ore can be smelted using NBT Smelting to an iron ingot and a piece of gunpowder.
  • Sulfuric acid, a new, throwable weapon that will wither foes and corrode stone.
  • Sulfuric acid is obtained by holding water bottles in gas leaks for 10 seconds.
  • Gas masks, which will protect their wearers from gas leaks and sulfuric acid.
  • Gas masks have a custom enchanting method, throw them onto enchanting tables or anvils with a suitable book to enchant them.
  • Added new custom behaviour for parrots, they will squawk when near gas leaks.
  • Added new custom behaviour for silverfish, they will break their blocks to escape gas leaks.
  • Added 4 custom advancements in their own tab.

This datapack was a submission for the August 2019 datapack jam held by the Minecraft Datapacks discord.

I'm playing in 1.14.4 and the crafting recipe for the gas mask results in it giving me a normal helmet

Is it displaying a helmet in the crafting guide, or is it also giving you a helmet when you use the crafting recipe, this is an important difference. If it's the latter, please tell me as that's something I'll look into to try and patch, if it is just displaying a regular helmet in the recipe guide, but gives you a book/gas mask when you craft it then it is working as intended.

This is really good, Though I do think gas leaks should slowly despawn over time(Though that's because I have a medieval survival world, and I wouldn't really like gas masks).



Maybe you could add a ventilation mechanic that detects whether an area is lit up with daylight and doesn't spawn gas on those areas? Just a suggestion.

Gas leaks will disappear long before a minute passes (after about 30 seconds), they do move slowly towards the player, but they cannot kill a player and can be avoided if need be. This should allow you to play without needing a gas mask at all.

soo... i tried this for Server Datapack, and now i cant join the server unless i removed the Datapack. Any solution??

Unfortunately I have no idea why that would be happening. I'll try to see if I can recreate the issue and then solve it, if I can't then it might be a Minecraft bug too. Are you running any other datapacks alongside this one?

Wow, this is really cool. Gonna download this in a little while and check it out - I just started a new world a few days ago, and have quite a lot done already, grinders, farms, house. This would totally make it more interesting to explore, which I would really enjoy.
Will I be able to add this into my world, and just /reload and hope it all works fine? will it load into new chunks and maybe mess with stuff belowground? Only thing is my stairs down to my mines, there is a grinder down there but I assume chances something messes up in that specific spot is low.

Or will it only work in new chunks? Or is a new world mandatory?

This datapack doesn't add any new generated structures. Instead the gas leaks spawn a bit like entities, and the Fools Gold ore drops from regular gold and iron ore blocks at random. So, the datapack should work unhindered in both old and new chunks, without messing with your grinders at all.Just be wary of AFKing underground, that's a little more risky now.

Yup, it's pretty neat! They are actually quite rare - Well they happen a lot but only for a few seconds so it was really hard to get a bottle of water out and actually get it to turn into the acid. Which doesn't seem overly useful, I figured maybe for a few seconds it woudl rapidly destroy stone blocks, but it just seems to destroy the 1 block the acid landed on lol, which is okay. It's definately cool to have, and another thing to worry about in terms of mining, which is always fun.

I hear you, might tweak the sulfuric acid a little then. Shear off a few seconds on the conversion and stuff. Thank you for the feedback.

Yeah for sure - Not sure what is possible as I don't do any modding and just got back into MC, haven't played in years since like 1.0 when mobs would get stuck in blocks and become invincible and there was like oak and spruce wood and that was it lol. This game has come a long way, and is quite fun.

So again - not sure what is possible, but some neat things would be like instead of a separate gas mask, maybe you can somehow make it so it's a diamond helmet that you can put a gas mask over, just by combing it in the inventory, and maybe even being able to uncombine it later, so you can choose when to wear it? Not sure. As well as filter changes - which would just be that there are two durabilities, the diamond helmet for when you take damage form mobs or whatever, and then a gas mask durability, when it reaches 0 the gas mask dissapears (helmet stays) and you have to replace it with another one. Meaning you have to keep enough on it otherwise you'll be at risk with the gas - and that's where gas would come into play. The acid idea is neat, may be able to make it a bit more potent, like you can have the gas leaks where you can gather stuff from, but you could even do things where like if you are underground (below a certain distance, maybe below y=40 or something) after a while of being down there without a gas mask, even if you weren't directly at a leak, you can get some type of poisoning, or like if you are around coal or something you can get it as well, and lots of people add like fatigue or mining slowness it seems - personally I wouldn't. Just a timer, after X amount of time you die, and it would need some tweaking, maybe you combust and all your gear gets destroyed? Something like that, and it could be a few hours or whatever and you could have special ingredients that can only be found in rare biomes or like the end or something, so if you don't keep your gas mask on you better get to the end quickly and get the ingredients you need for a cure otherwise you're dead, or whatever.

lol..just some ideas, I'm sure those are a bit over the top, but I just wish the game had more stuff to find when exploring, and quests almost, if that makes sense. Certain things you had to do to progress, or you run into a bad situation you have to go do stuff to save yourself.

haha idk, but yeah man definately a cool mod and gives us something else to have to worry about, which is always good. Minecraft can be a bit bland otherwise.
