Why do people have 5 fingers (not 4 or 6) on each hand?

Great question! Here's the answer.

First you have to look at what other things have five fingers (digits):
* All primates have five fingers.
* Dogs and cats have five digits in their front paws ... one of them, called the "dewclaw" is further up in the foot and serves no purpose.
* Bats have five digits in their wings.
* Moles have five digits in their digging claws.
* Anteaters have five digits in their front feet.
* In whales and dolphins we see five digits in the bone structure of the fliippers.
* Ditto the pinipeds (seals, sea lions, walruses, etc.)
* In even-toed hoofed animals (pigs, goats, deer, giraffes, camels), two central toes (3 and 4) form the split hoof, and secondary toes (2 and 5) form an unused dewclaw, and the first toe (1) is present in embryos but either disappears by full adulthood, or is reduced to a vestigial bone in the leg.
* In odd-toed hoofed animals (horses), the central toe (digit 3) forms the main hoof, but again we see the other digits in reduced form in the upper leg (the fetlock) or in early embyonic development.

So all mammals are either fully five-fingered (what we call "pentadactyl") or in the case of hoofed mammals have remnants of the other toes in the upper leg and in embryos.

Birds also either have either five toes in their feet and five vestigial digits in their wings ... or have a smaller number, but have remnants of the other digits in their bone structure (such as "spurs" higher up on the leg or on the wing) or in embryos.

Reptiles are the same. Most (look at aligators and crocodiles) have five digits, and those that have fewer show signs of vestigial digits. The exceptions are snakes, which have pretty much lost all their legs, but still show signs of them during embyonic development or even in adulthood ... pythons, for example, have tiny leg buds.

Amphibians (e.g. frogs) are the exception among the land vertebrates. They have five toes in the back, but only four in the front and show no signs of ever having had five.

However, NO modern land vertebrate has more than five.

And ALL land vertebrates (and aquatic mammals) have exactly four limbs. There are no land vertebrates with six limbs, or eight, or only two. (The exception, again, are snakes, that seem to have lost all limbs, but still have traces that they descended from limbed animals.)

So the answer, in a word, is *evolution*.

The earliest vertebrates (tetrapods) that emerged from the water appear to have had more than five toes (as many as six, seven or even eight toes, based on fossils). But these very early on split into two branches, the amphibians, and the amniotes (what are now reptiles, birds and mammals). The amphibians stabilized on five fingers in the back, four in the front, and the amniotes stabilized on five fingers on all four limbs.

...im a nerd
