So recently, I wanted to build ilmango's Drowned farm in my survival world. But in order to do that effectively, it was suggested to light up as many caves underneath the ocean around the drowned farm as possible.

Why? The mob cap. If there are too many mobs spawning in the caves, not as many drowned will spawn near the farm.

One problem with this, is that you'll never know if you're lighting up caves that you don't need to light. You don't know where you are in relation to the farm.

So I discovered this method to always know whether you're straying too far from the farm!

Prerequesites:

-Ability to make full power conduit

-Water bucket

Basically, build a conduit right where your farm is going to be.
Next, just explore the caves you need to light.
Every once in a while, make a 2 deep hole, and put your water bucket in it.
Get in, and check to see if you have conduit power.

If you do, you'll know you're within 80 blocks of your farm.
If not, you'll know to stop going in that direction.

This can work with regular Mob grinders too. Here's how to make it work.

Make a 7x7x7 area near your Mob grinder, and fill it completely with water.

Build your conduit in there!

Now you can explore caves and use the same method to check how far away you are from your farm!

If you'd like to use this method for a longer radius, Id suggest marking a spot that is almost out of your conduit's range, and rebuilding your conduit there.

Just repeat that process and light those caves up!

Now this method is for use in later game. Considering this assumes you have access to prismarine. But it's an easier method than caving blindly if you happen to have the resources on hand!

That's why coordinates exist.

Again, this is a late game method and it’s more for convenience than anything else. I found it worth the time to build the conduit and be able to check just by placing down a water bucket rather than opening coordinates and doing the mental math.

no need to be rude

I wasn't being rude, I just don't see why you can't use coordinates to see how deep and far away you need to go to light up caves.

It’s just for the people who find placing a water bucket easier. I certainly did.
