Is it possible to add transparency to a block that doesn't already support it?

This seems to be a big question without many answers. I modeled the furnace, blast furnace, and smoker and added flame animations for their on states, but had to add a background to the flames so that MC wouldn't just replace the transparent areas with a default color. It'd really add a lot to be able to add the flames with the transparent areas staying transparent!

Thanks in advance!

Maybe changing the model to be hollow can work

Doing that. But the models have animated flames that would greatly benefit from some transparency

By vanilla means? No

You would have to mod the game to change rendering properties of the block.
