Skeletons of Society-RP Applications

Plot:

The year is A.D 826, and the ancient city-state of Orok is slowly crumbling apart. The economy is failing, and the military is constantly fending off attacks. The people are near starvation, with the relentless government raising taxes to support the broken economy. Nearly everyone is living in fear.

The only people who have it fairly well-off are those in the temple or who work for the corrupted government. The people who haven't already fled the area have resorted to stealing from the temple just to survive. And it's only a matter of time before Orok becomes....a skeleton of society.

Setting, and places of interest:

Orok is a coastal province, with rolling plains and towering mountains. The climate is fairly humid.

The temple: Place where the priests reside. Most of the ancient relics and treasures are stored here, making it a target for thieves.

Name:
Rilik Vendursten

Age:
31

Personality:
Rash, greedy. Very spiteful, but clever.

Fears:
Dying, and snakes. Mostly snakes. Dey be creepeh.

Backstory:
Born into a poor family, Rilik didn't really have much to work with as far as a good childhood went. Growing up he learned to hunt from his father, and helped put food on the table for many years. When he got older, there weren't many job opportunities, because of his families... darker past. So, what job to people get when they can't do legal things? That's right! Theivery!
For awhile, this worked out pretty well for him. Armed with a knife and using the shadows to his advantage, he managed to gather a living for himself. Soon, however, he went for a bigger target. The temple. Now, there was quite a bit to steal from the temple, more than just money. But, where there are valuable artifacts to buy, the shadier people come out.
It was a normal day for Rilik, he was just out on the streets, making a sale. However, things went sour, and soon Rilik ended up in a bloody mess, everything he had with him stolen. It took a long time to recover from the injuries, but when he did, Rilik was a changed man. Not much changed though. He still stole, but he was more of a dealer in illegal things, rather than primarily stealing. After the incident, though, he did spend some time learning to fight.

Sorry, it's been awhile since I actually applied for an RP...

Name:
Elrich Hendsen

Age:
41

Appearance:
Click to reveal

Weapons and Armor:
Elrich's weapon of choice is his notorious sabre, and he wears iron armor above his silk under-wear.

Personality:
Elrich was born into a brutal family of mercenaries, so like many of his other siblings, he was raised by his father into his own personal weapon. However, Elrich was naturally an aggressive and ambitious person, and would do anything - including having his own family or friends murdered - in order to obtain power.

Fears:
Fears? Ha. Do not humor Elrich with such questions. He fears nothing.

Backstory:
Elrich was born in a neighboring nation, and raised by a strict and fierce mercenary family. At age 18, Elrich became his father's apprentice in the smithery, while his eldest brother, Mikhal (Elrich's father's favorite), joined his nation's army. Unsatisfied with his life as an apprentice, and jealous of his brother, Elrich invited Mikhal to a tavern, and convinced Mikhal to spend the night with a courtesan, who later killed Mikhal, under Elrich's orders.
He then took Mikhal's place as a general, thereby becoming one of the most powerful men in his nation. Elrich quickly surrounded himself with cruel and effective men; all of which he killed later to take their place. The army's commanders soon grew suspicious of Elrich, and declared him to be executed.
Elrich managed to escape jail as he was being led to the gallows, and fled the town. He hid in the forest's outside of Orok of a few months, and realized his bloodlust could not be fulfilled by mere wildlife and occasional travelers. He entered Orok under a false name, and after proving his worth, was accepted into the Orok Guard. Now, he secretly kills the Guard's officials one by one, filling his bloodlust, waiting until the Guard's commanders realize that he's the murderer.

Citizen

Name
Nathaniel Eyre

Age
29

Appearance
The foolish once-noble, he wears the silken robes of the upper-class –perhaps he was once one. His platinum blonde hair is worn in uncomplicated way, but very… Loose, it stops just at his eyes. It appears he stopped tending to it long ago, along with his facial hair, which has grown into a thin beard. His amber eyes are bright and intense, yet dull at the same time. He has a strong build, uncommon for the upper-class, which confirms that he is clearly not one. He bears a long scar across his right arm, with evidence of poor stitching.

Personality/Fears
Nathaniel is incredibly prideful, and fearful of being embarrassed, both publicly and privately. He’s very self-conscious, and is even self-conscious about being self-conscious (if that made any sense). Nathaniel could be consider a “doormat”, as he is very passive and simply doesn't like putting people in an uncomfortable situation, no matter how easy it would be to rectify the situation. He has the qualities of a good leader, but would prefer to sit back and not get involved in things. He hates thieves unconditionally, the reason for this being explained in the backstory. He might say he simply dislikes confrontation, but that’s not necessarily it at all; he is actually somewhat scared of it.

Backstory
Nathaniel was born to the royal family of a high ranking soldier and priest, inevitably setting him up to have an important role in the province when he grew older. He was an only child, and had servants care for him and tend to him as a child, since his father was often busy fending off attacks from the other city-states. His mother sometimes had time for him, but barely enough to say she actually mothered him as much as a normal mother would.

He grew up with an interest in swordsmanship, but was injured during a sparring match with someone at an amphitheater. He broke his dominant arm terribly, causing bone to jut out of his left arm. It was very odd how he broke it, too. He was feigning a swing at his opponents' left, he was suddenly counter-attacked and forced to dodge when he tripped over his own foot and landed in a way where it shoved his lower-arm bone (his ulna) up and pointing out at the elbow. He didn't doge it in time, and not only did he get a broken arm, but he also sustained a nasty wound. His parents made him quit sparring, and they searched for surgeon, or at least a healer who dealt with that kind of thing. The one who stitched Nathaniel's arm wasn't experienced enough, but luckily, they found one who was. But for some reason, the healer refused to do it unless they paid him everything they had. The Eyres refused, and threatened the healer to help Nathaniel or face the consequences (which, they did not actually have the power to do something to him). The healer persistently refused, and Nathaniel was stuck with a deformed arm for quite some time.

Years passed, and Nathaniel stayed with his arm. He was 28, and had gotten the job of handling and guarding the province temple’s treasury. He hired guards to help him guard it, since with his arm he was incapable of actually guarding it adequately. The real reason he had the job was he could account for all of it –one could say he sort of helped balance the currency sometimes. Sure, it might not have been fair, but… He did what he thought –or what others made him think –was right.

Eventually his parents found a healer who agreed to do what was medically needed done to fix Nathaniel’s arm. The healer re-broke Nathaniel’s arm (which was incredibly painful) and set it properly. His parents paid the healer, and felt somewhat silly that all that was needed was to simply re-break it and splint it to heal properly. Hell, Nathaniel’s father could have done that himself if they'd known. But, it did not matter. While Nathaniel was healing, he didn't watch over the temple’s treasury as much as he should have, and there was a terrible incident. His guards were both absent for injuries (they were only part-time guards, they were actually soldiers who took part in the battles with the other city-states), and Nathaniel was looking to hire some full-time guards, but when Nathaniel got there one morning almost everything was stolen. When people higher up in the government arrived, Nathaniel was blamed. They didn't care if he wasn't the one to steal it –which they never disproved –they simply cared that it was gone, and it was his job to watch it.

His father disowned him, having his own son bring shame to his family. Nathaniel was stripped of his upper-class status, and promptly was thrown out onto the cobbled roads of Orok. He tried to pick up stealing to get by, but even that he can’t do properly with an arm that was still healing. He managed to steal a good bit of food once, and he began living off that. He made a makeshift home out of an abandoned forge, which was rumored to have a band of thieves living there (which is why he went there, because most were too scared to go inside). After his arm healed to an extent, he was able to properly protect himself –which is how he managed to gain a somewhat strong build.

Other
Sorry if the sentences kind of run together, I was partially rushed :3. Well, I wasn't technically, but I wanted to hurry and finish it~
And yes, I realize sometimes a broken bone can cause internal infections, leading to death. That wasn't the case with him, because of how it was broken.

Innus was born into a family of farmers. His mother was a renowned gardener for the royalty of Orok, and his father a farmer in the outskirts of town. Although his parents loved each other very much, and they both loved Innus, the two rarely saw each other. Innus didn't prefer one to the other, he loved being around the nature and life. Although, Innus found it very fun to live in the castle when he was with his mother. He had made many friends between school

When Innus was only 13, his mother died of an unknown disease, she fell asleep, and never woke up. Innus and his father were devastated, until one day, his father snapped, and walked out. Innus didn't speak for 5 years after that.

Without speaking, Innus turned to books for knowledge, he had found all the books in the royal library fascinating, but wanted more. He searched harder into the older sections of the library. Shelved, hidden between two dusty brown books, was a green, leather bound book. It caught Innus' eye instantly, and he cracked it open. There was a bright flash, and Innus was knocked out cold. He awoke many days later, feeling odd.

As the weeks passed, Innus quickly went back to the place that was the most comfortable for him. The royal garden. He had always felt life around him, but now he could sense the plants. It made him feel alive, and he had been gardening all his life, so he talked his way into becoming gardener.

Innus had been gardening for 9 years now, and it was his 27th birthday. He didn't have any friends, and no one would miss him, so Innus went to the garden. Over time, Innus had found ways to make plants grow better, without even touching them. Maybe it was a sense between the plants and him, or maybe it was the magic tome he read so long ago. It didn't matter to him.

Name:

Thalimir Erakson

Age:

46

Appearance:

Occupation:

Thalimir serves as the commander of the Orokian military force. He doesn't go on the front-lines very often, and instead resides comfortably in the Palace, where he plans out attacks and naval conquests.

Weapon:

His main accessible weapon is his trusty dagger, which he keeps with him at all times. It is forged from one of the strongest materials known, one that he hasn't revealed to many. He also has direct access to the barracks, and keeps weapons mounted in his quarters.

Personality:

Thalimir can be seen as a cold, unloving person. He is very prideful, and feels he is better than others because of his decorated combat history. Aside from that arrogant feel, he is also unforgiving. Thalimir doesn't believe in second chances, and few would dare get in his way. His loyalty to the governor and his soldiers is one of the only things that makes him distinguishable as a human being.

Fears:

His main fear is losing his power. Thalimir earned his position as commander, and will do anything to prevent his power being stripped. He also has a rather odd fear of arachnids.

Backstory:

With such a cold-hearted personality, it is almost hard to believe that Thalimir grew up as a happy young boy. His father held a high position in the Orokian government, and wanted his son to go into politics as he did. The youngling did not share the same views as his father, and instead spent his time trying to prove to his father that he could be a fighter. On his twelfth birthday, he was given a bronze sword. While he considers it weak now, it was to him then the greatest thing to happen to him. He spent countless hours a week attacking practice dummies, and as a result his parents began to worry for him. They felt as if he was not focusing enough on the right things, but they didn't realize that he just did not want to follow in their footsteps.

Having established that he was choosing his own destiny, he packed up and left home at the age of nineteen. Thalimir made money by trading with caravans, and at one point he even resorted to thievery. He didn't stay in one area for too long, yet he never really strayed far of Orok. The grand city was a symbol of peace and prosperity. Not until Thalimir turned 24 did that all change. A rival nation was invading from the eastern coast, and Thalimir decided to enlist in the ranks of warriors. While he spent a great deal of time training on the high seas, he was eventually placed as a squad leader on the ground. This came as a shock to him, but it was one of the building blocks of his great success as a leader. He lost many good men in the nearly twelve-year war, and suffered a tragedy of his own. While Thalimir and his squad were defending a nearby fortress, four bandits attacked his wife's village. Only one person was left alive long enough to warn him, as the remnants of his past life were burnt to the ground.

Upper-class application

Name: Chancellor Matthias Beruda

Age: 60

Appearance: Face and hair:

As for clothing, he wears black robes with a purple trim. For public appearances, he wears a white robe with an ornate gold trim with the Orok coat of arms emblazoned on the front, while strapped to his side is a gold hilted, jewel encrusted iron scimitar.

Occupation: Chief Propagandist for the government

Weapon: None, but his dress robes feature a ceremonial scimitar

Personality: A cold demeanour and an iron will, Chancellor Beruda is a manipulative and scheming individual who by nowadays standards could be described as Machiavellian. Chancellor Beruda's megalomaniacal tendencies cause him to have a near insatiable desire for power - he takes every opportunity possible to earn even more power within the government, surrounds himself with sycophants who owe their positions (and sometimes even their lives) to him, and loves nothing more than to ensnare people in an elaborate web of lies and deceit. He isn't one for co-operation unless the benefits are slanted in his favour (which is why he shares such a good relationship with the head of the Secret Police). 'Criticism' is not a word in his vocabulary - opposing views are inferior, and the advice of others is an viewed by him as an act of defiance rather than helpful or constructive A master orator, Chancellor Beruda often is relied upon by the government to boost morale, demonise a person or group, or to justify decisions made by the government.

Fears: Being wrong, losing power, competition

Backstory: Matthias Beruda, or the 'Spider of Orok' as he is known by his critics and much of the populace, was born into the upper class of Orokian society. The heavy divisions between classes in Orok meant that Beruda never had an experience with the overwhelming number of poor citizens until he was in his late teens. By this point, his upbringing and education had already made him self-centred and jaded - having never experienced the hardships of common life, he viewed the lower classes as riff-raff and scum whose sole purpose in life was to be subjugated for the betterment of the rich and powerful.

Immediately after his twenty-fourth birthday, he used family friends and generous bribes to earn himself a low-level job in the government. His forked tongue and scheming ways were soon noted by those higher up, and after a few years he was promoted to a scribe's position in the propaganda department.

But that wasn't enough. The insatiable desire for more and his own delusions of grandeur burned within him, fuelled him to climb higher and higher through the ranks. He lied, cheated, bribed, slandered and murdered his way to the top of the pile, where he has remained for the last thirteen years.

Hm. I have a few questions before I app~

If it's a city-state, what is it a part of? A kingdom? If so, does said kingdom have a name?

Who are they being attacked by? Other city-states? Or someone completely different?

And, er, can you elaborate a bit on the temple? I mean, I'm just wondering why people would steal from it -what it would have of value.

Though, it all does sound rather interesting.

2. Other city-states.

3. The temple is a sacred place, where the rich and priests live. Lots of the city-state's riches and relics are there.
