I'm trying to get started on my block textures for my pack but the grass textures are a mystery for me. I know that they change per biome colour-wise so how can I make custom textures work? I know I basically need to use my dirt textures as a base for the side texture plus the edge of the grass I'm going to make. However, there's also the side overlay & top textures which I guess are the ones that change colour in different biomes, so how do those texture work?

Side and top textures are picking a color from colormap/grass.png based on the biome.

Color from the colormap is multimpled with base texture giving final output seen in the game.

Here's a template for colormap texture that shows what colors are used for specyfic biome

Does that mean when I create the base texture for my grass it doesn't matter whether or not it's "grey-scale"?

It should be grayscale , but will work also with colored textures but you will get a different effect

I see, thanks! I'll probably use colour first just to get a good base, then use a greyscale effect so the colours won't be off for the other biomes.
