This has been a question that I’ve been asking myself in my mind for a while, is the graphics card or processor more important for Minecraft?

Where's the "both" option? I have a 1600 @3.8GHz and an RX 580 playing at 1080p + OptiFine. 16 chunks, max lighting/fancy (fast render on and other options like this), and I'll normally get 120-300fps. I also play on a 1.9-1.12 server (server caps 8 chunks), yet my fps will often dip below 60 when there's a lot of players/particles. If I swapped out my 580 with my spare 750 Ti, you can bet your ass those frames will drop even more; just like if I were to swap it out with a 2080 Ti, those frames will go up. If I were to swap my 1600 with a 3700X/9700K the frames will also go up. This is the same deal for literally any other game on the market. This logic just doesn't make sense, a 9900K with its onboard UHD Graphics 630, will not run the game better than my rig, yet my Ryzen 1600 is an inferior CPU. This proves that the GPU matters. If it didn't, then I'd still be playing on an i7 4710HQ HD Graphics 4600 laptop.

Neither is more important than the other, this is a stupid question and the age old myth of Minecraft being a CPU only bound game is still around, so it seems. Back when it came out, it was super unoptimized and would abuse your CPU, now thats not the case anymore, and offloads a lot of the workload onto the GPU, like it should have from the get go... Also CPU's have came along way since 2009.

You cannot play Minecraft without a GPU, it's not possible lol.... The textures don't matter, the fact that the game is very un-optimized is why you need an okay GPU anymore. Sure you can get 150fps on the shortest rendering distance with optifine, but you're also running a UHD 620, which is a decent iGPU, comparable to a AMD HD 7750 of the years past. But again, look at any hardware logger and see the load on your GPU and CPU, and it will tell you everything you need to know.

Also, I think I know a little bit more than you, lol

Well isn't it impossible to run any PC without a GPU?

Perhaps by "no GPU" he meant integrated GPU?

I would assume that's what he meant, but for someone that "knows what hes talking about" should know how to word it better. And you can't run a PC without any form of GPU, there would be no way to display anything.

Run this game on a high end CPU and a low end GPU and see if you enjoy it. You wont... You want a decent GPU nowadays, for more than just Minecraft, but also due to the fact that it's not as optimized as it used to be, runs a decent amount of the load on the GPU, open up any hardware logger and see the usage from cpu and gpu.

Lighting is calculated and stored with the CPU. Rendering that lighting is very simple, and with the force-on addition of VBOs, and even Optifine, a small GPU can run the game just fine, provided that it supports OpenGL 2.0 (1.15 future requirement). Most of the games actions are done in the CPU, like AI, leaf decay, commands, collision, and world changes.

Of course, but again run this game on a low end GPU and it won't be a pleasant time, as I've stated numerous times now.

I have. I've ran it on a GT 710, and it ran at 60FPS constant with the right settings.

"with the right settings" aka, lowest settings possible with optifine. You can't even run the vanilla game as a pleasant frame rate, what do you guys not understand about that? You can run GTA V on a GT 710 with mods to lower everything to make it "playable", doesn't mean that it's okay because of that to skimp out on the GPU.

Yes, it's playable. But try to run Minecraft on a Pentium I. Doubt it'll run at all.

100% the CPU. Minecraft's graphics don't need a strong graphics card at all; I built my own computer and my graphics card is absolutly nothing special but with a powerful enough CPU you can run Minecraft very smoothly.
