I guess I don't really care. I haven't really wanted to build higher than the limit.

For the average survival player, the height limit is probably unnoticeable, and they probably don't care either way. For a builder, it is likely that they definitely want a higher build limit, especially if they build skyscrapers and large mountains.
I am curious as to why people are suggesting the higher height limit should be optional. Is there a performance impact on the game with a higher limit? I don't see the point in making it optional otherwise, as there would be no changes other than adding more space.

oh yeah increase that height limit. it would be nice but, like someone else said it should be changable kinda like how you can change the tick speed on pe edition, maybe?
2
oh but you could also make it lower for like a twelve blocks the limit challenge

For person who originally played old PE version of the game, the java edition height is too much and i couldnt get to the height limit but for making structures and stuff,
It might not be enough. I think make it optional.

I need a height limit increase for my Twin Towers Map!

yes it should be increased because i was trying to build a replica of the tallest building in the world for a map, but ain't there no space.

It would be good if the height was increased, although I think whether or not people take advantage of it depends on the sort of scale people build to. Personally it's not too much of an issue for me at the moment given the size of the stadia I'm building, but if I was to build others like Old Trafford and the Etihad Stadium (the latter of which I have started), then I definitely could use the height increase to my advantage

That would be kinda fun, but I like that it's 256 blocks, because it makes it more of a challenge to build big. If I want to build even bigger, then I can just install mods that can break that limit :p

Yes, as long as the necessary steps to reducing lag are taken beforehand. In fact, implementing cubic chunks into Minecraft is completely viable, as proven by Minetest, it's a completely free and open-source Minecraft clone and the CubicChunks-like code is built into the engine itself, the game runs smoothly even on older computers and a Minetest world spans 62 million blocks in any direction. There are mods that take advantage of this gigantic height limit with stuff like thinner atmosphere, where you need a sealed helmet to survive at very high altitudes, and even space exploration.
I should note that the major source of lag in Minetest is the fact that games (or super datapacks if you will) are written in Lua. A nearly blank game with only one node (or block) definition is extremely fast, even when going millions into the sky or underground.

Amplified terrain is a different thing entirely to a higher build limit. With Amplified terrain, there is just more blocks in total compared to a default vanilla world. They both use the same build limit, but one has more content. If every world received a higher build limit, the only thing that we would want added is more space, not more blocks. We don't want higher mountains or terrain in a default world than we already have. We just want more space to build taller structures. This way, the world stays the same, but you can build better nerd poles.

Ah, okay. Yeah, it would be impractical for players with weaker computers, if they do want to have more blocks in their world. Even amplified is labeled by the game to require "beefy computers". I think the higher build limit should be a thing. I don't imagine making it optional would be practical though, but it shouldn't be a problem if additional empty space isn't performance heavy. It would be good for the players who have the means to upgrade their computers to research how to do so. A lot of players, of course, likely don't have the means.

but, it really depends on what computer you have

More height means taller mountains! And that means you can dig deeper to build your dwarven hall!! You have my axe voting for YES!!! :D

I'm not sure what the benefit of it would be I guess. I mean, sure you could build taller structures but to what end? It might be fun for certain things though like roller coasters that take deep dives down or jumping off of really tall platforms onto slime blocks to see how high you can bounce.

The thought behind a higher build limit is you can build higher, or you could not. It's optional, and you could just as well ignore it. Although, I am not aware, is there a performance impact behind just having more space, and not necessarily having it filled? I would like to know more about that.
