Eight works fine and all, but it is made to be overly simple, and basically, made for idiots. I mean no offense for people who like it, but it is designed to be like a tablet, mostly a competition for ipad. Better than the Ipad gui, but still inferior to 7. If your dad is technologically unsophisticated, give him 8. If he is more technologically sound, give him seven.

Agreed, but to be honest, windows 7 is more simple to use than 8, it's fairly self explanatory whereas windows 8 relies on you knowing a lot of weird touch gestures, but maybe i'm wrong, I've been using traditional desktop OSs for years now.

Simply put:
Windows 7 is designed for a desktop interface, with next to no limitations or restrictions.

Windows 8 is a slightly re skinned version of windows 7, with a new, nearly impossible to use (with a mouse) gui to replace the start menu.
It is also Microsoft's attempt to make the desktop platform a closed medium for purchasable, exclusive software. Basically, they are trying to get money off you in the same way that they do, and will continue to do with Xbox.
If you wanna play games and do stuff, stick to windows 7.
If you don't wanna play games but still wanna do stuff, use a Linux distribution with a good gui, eg Ubuntu.

If you want to spend your free time wishing you were on windows 7, accidentally sending money to microsoft with it's various built-in store features and basically using windows 8 as if it was windows 7, use windows 8.

But linux will be dominating the desktop market in the next 3 years anyway, no need to worry.

No, don't 'get a mac'.
If you really like OSX, do what smart people do and build a Hackintosh, don't buy an overpriced computer from apple.

I have Windows 8 and personally if you don't have a touchscreen computer don't even get it. It's mostly centered around touch screen laptops and tablets. Although you can get to the old desktop screen on Windows 8, Menu-flipping is just not fun.

Well, either windows 8 or 7 will do, if you are a type of guy who likes pretty colors as your OS, 8. 7 for me is more on the productivity range due to its simplicity. Both are versatile... but I'm for 7 the most.

FTFY

By 'best' I meant speed, but you're entitled to evaluate the word 'best' however you want. I suppose a lot of apps and programs don't run on Mac so that's a huge downside.

mac is high end stuff most people who hate mac have never owned one you can leave it running for three days and it will run perfectly

Although Macs are high end stuff, they have a very high price, often out of budget for most computer buyers, and if they did have enough money, they would be getting a bad bargain. $1200 could buy you a half decent Mac or a pretty good PC. Macs are known as the "invincible" computer brand, invulnerable to viruses and "running for three days and working perfectly". I have tried and use Macs a lot, especially when I do tech help for my school and they are decent for basic movie editing and sound editing. Besides that, the clean interface hides the low power of a Mac. Most Macs are sold with 1-2 GB of RAM for $1000, while $2000 Macs have only 8 GB of RAM. With that amount of money, you could build yourself a very good gaming or performance computer.

In terms of running for three days, almost any new computer can run for a week long, and still work perfectly. That makes no difference. I can take an old Windows 95 PC from HP and have it on for a week and it will still work. Overall, PCs are a good bang for your buck, giving you optimal performance for a good price.

Thank you! Finally someone agrees with me! The Mac is way too much out of my price range.

We were talking about quality, not price.

Honestly in my opinion it's all down to personal preference. I'm sure you can get trial version of Windows 8. I'd just test them both and see which feels better to you. I'd also choose someone's advice before this thread is locked, because of the PC-Mac flame war going on.

Windows 8 hands down.
Easier to fix with better error messages.
It's safer.
It's faster.
It's newer.
I have been using it since beta.
I have 5 computers with it and not an issue.

People hate windows 8 for one main reason. IT's DIFFERENT and people don't like learning new stuff.

I would personally go with Windows 7. It's what I have on my gaming rig at the moment. I did have Windows 8, however, for a short period of time on this rig. The only problem I noticed is, well, there were a TON of bugs in SP1, but that should be fixed by now. Also, losing the start orb was a BIG turn-off for me. Other than those two things, Windows 8 was nice. I liked the Metro theme, it was a very impressive and quite smooth experience.

They're both the same price. Go with the one you like. Win8 starts up faster and has apps and such, Win7 boots slower, but has the classic start button. You can get the old start button with external programs if you'd like. I only use Win7 because of personal preference and I got it free.
