I've recently been thinking about making a new skin, one that would feel a bit more personnal to me, so i naturally browsed on the good old skin bank to get inspiration from other people's creations, but when i entered the trending page, all i found was an endless flow of soulless and colorless "gamer" skins that all feel like a copy of the other over and over.
Is that really what people want? Is that really the key to success? Just repeating the same bland and uncreative idea?
All of those feel almost... Depressive.
I mean, i can understand people who have absolutely no pixel art skill and make bad skins, but at least, they're unique. They're personnal. My own skin was like that, before i started elabotating a shit load of lore over this character who began to feel like a part of my very identity.
People don't see the value of minecraft skins anymore. Your skin can be a piece of art, an extension of yourself.
But people can't appreciate this value anymore.

My skins are all original to me only so there
I think I have made several "unique" skins. I have not seen any skins of some characters I have made
i haven't seen this trend myself. also learn how to spell "personal", please.
English is not my native language. Sorry for the mistakes.
I think my purge trooper skin is pretty cool..
Also people make those emo skins or ones with no mouth and they’re all the same
gimme. i want inspiration for being cringe.
Should i treat this personally? My skin has no mouth
No like I mean the ones with 2 pixel long and wide eyes and long bangs
Right now there is a infestation of "eboy" skins which have the same palette, same style, same hair, different name. And with the "gamer" skins, they are the oldest skin copypasta yet.
I mean, we do live in the age of reproduction, so yes. All the artists that do make original art and skins have gotten off the internet because of ai which leaves only reproductions
yes
It is a bummer that a lot of stuff is copy / paste styles, and with so much of it, it’s easy to lose sight of the incredible stuff make on the daily. A couple of creators I can immediately pick out who frequently show up on the trending page are Igor Tio, who has a very charming and more realistic style based off of historical figures, strawbrysage with consistently fun limited-palette skins, and amyselia, whose style is reminiscent of (and perfect for) Renaissance and other painting styles. All of these creators definitely deserve the recognition they have, and props to them for posting such quality content frequently!
On another note, a lot of people can have seemingly conventional styles, yet add their own spin to it and push the boundaries of skinning. A couple of great creators who come to mind when it comes to stuff like this are xTuff who uses very colorful and dynamic shading, DragonsDungeon with phenomenal palettes, and Moon with an incredible understanding of depth. While a lot of these skinners’ work may parallel regular skin shapes, they make it something completely new. If you want to go really unconventional, I’d recommend looking at creators like herywald and Le Moon, both of who have really fun skins!
There are plenty more GOATed skinners out there, these were just some of the first people that came to mind!

i also have good skins.
True, many creators stem off of each other to form a style, though it could be caused by the popularity of the skins that look a certain way, leading to smaller creators who would like to be more popular to reference the larger creator's style.
Oml I can't stand gamer skins-- My best friend's little brother uses one and it drives me INSANE!!
(this is coming from someone who uses an anthro skin that they tried to make at least SLIGHTLY unique)

I've felt this way a lot too! It can be really depressing sometimes.
You only find a good skin by scrolling through lists every once in a while. There are actually plenty of people who have their own style, you just have look really closely and hard to find them.

You share all my braincells.
Just 'cause someone is melancholic doesn't mean everybody else has to be integrated into their world too

You'd be surprised at what kind of skinners are out there. Here are a few individuals I think you would like:
Mavionne
BlueBoyBuilds
Squidjees
NuggetTheOwl
Reesey

& also DONT FORGET ME.
This is not a shoutout list. He was upset about skins not having any artistic personality, so I wanted to point him in the direction of skinners that I thought matched what he was looking for. I considered a lot of different people, but I wanted to boil the list down to five.
Thank you so much I’m honored ToT <33

Surprise surprise, mass culture is soulless
"…so i naturally browsed on the good old skin bank to get inspiration from other people's creations…."
Very common, and quite likely a contributor to the problem; surveying prior art can lead to overly imitative work.
(Hardly unique to MC — just look at all the Potter-esque books that have released in the last several years.)
There is also the issue of running up against the resloution limit after 15 years of others mining the same field, as example: try making a skin with a handlebar mustasche without having it look Mumbo-ish….

This has been a "problem" since forever. I've noticed/lamented the steady flow of unimaginative or low-effort skins on here since the first day I joined back in 2013. It's nothing new and nothing to blame newer generations of Minecrafters for. Mainstream art in any sphere is going to be less interesting than the stuff you sift out and curate for yourself.
Try looking through established members' site feeds (profile, blue button on the left, "personalized site feed", example here) to see what kind of content other people are seeing from the people they're subscribed to. That'll give you a nicer, filtered view of content that might be more geared towards the sort of inspiring work you're looking for. People subscribe to the people who inspire them, maybe they'll inspire you, too!
Also try browsing SSPBL and the content galleries of the creators who participate in it! There are a lot of creative people flexing their skinning chops on the regular over there.

Honestly, This post and a video from I think chucknasty on the history of skins really summarizes how skins today haven't been good anymore. I personally even with a few outfits borrowed from other creators make my skins my own and unique to me. I hate seeing players use all those emo and gamer skins.
I've just looked up this video, and i think we clearly share the same observations. If you go to popular servers like hypixel or stuff, all you see is gamer skins.
I'm working on one right now though
What do you mean? I see skins of all kinds nearly every day and they're all unique. Can you explain how they look "soulless and colorless" please?
I was referring to planet minecraft's "trending" page. I know most people have their own skins but most people don't even bother to make something different. I did not generalise the entirety of skins, i'm just trying to expose the fact that the latest skins were soulless.
