Good Second Language?
I've been thinking about learning a second language over the summer. I want something a little unusual, so nothing like Spainish, French, Chinese. I'm curious to see what you guys come up with!

I've always wanted to learn Mandarin, but i'm too lazy.
1
I had Mandarin in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade. It isn't very easy, and probably not very useful since it is only spoken in certain parts of China.
1
German would be a great second language to learn
1
Korean is good. No bias here. I promise.

Got some new ideas. ConLangs! (constructed language)
High Valyrian! It's so cool. Here's some.
Nyke Daenerys Jelmāzmo hen Targārio Lentrot, hen Valyrio Uēpo ānogār iksan. Valyrio muño ēngos ñuhys issa. “I am Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, of the blood of Old Valyria. Valyrian is my mother tongue.”
Dothraki! Plenty of words for Horse, no word for thanks.
Anha vazhak maan firikhnharen hoshora ma mahrazhi aqovi affin mori atihi mae. "I will give to him a golden crown and men will tremble when they will see it."
Klingon! Gotta love reading Hamlet in the original Klingon.
tlhIngan Hol Dajatlh'a'? "Do you speak Klingon?"
That's all for now.

Anything related to Arabia/Asia

Sign Language.
k.
I think there's a language that involves mouth noises rather than mouth words.
If you wanna be REAL CREATIVE, learn bird singing.

...But... Spanish is so much fun...
1
If you learn Spanish, you can then learn Italian and Portuguese because the languages are similar.
Also, you can do a dead language like Latin. So you can chant in peoples faces and summon the dark knight and make batman go 'arrr potato'

I really want to learn Finnish or Greek, though I doubt they would come in very useful as they aren't spoken often in the area I live (Britain).
1
When I hear people putting off something they like, I think it is ridiculous! Just because you wont need it or use doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. I'm learning Japanese and I'm also living in Britain - nobody speaks that here! Anyway, my point is if you want to do something just do it! It's fun and something to say because you can!

If you want a challenge, then Polish or Mandarin.
1
I'm Polish and I agree
1
I highly suggest either sign language or Latin.
I just think sign language is really cool, and you can broaden the people that you talk to.
And I just think Latin is cool because um...why not? In choir they sing many songs in Latin so in a couple years I'll probably know lots.

Maybe try Dutch? It's pretty hard, especially the grammar, it is like a combination between German and English and then a bit of it's own. It will provide a nice challenge if you are into something hard to learn ^^ (Might not be very usefull, but the dutch are still everywere in the world )
If you're into something practical, sign language will be really usefull as with this you can basically "communicate" almost everywhere with the basic stuff. Can help you if you like traveling .

Dutch is a very interesting language, i really would suggest it. As said it provides you with tough grammar, but a nice language.
1
Hebrew, most Jewish people speak it.
1
How about learning sign language. True everywhere has different sign language so it might not seem that useful but you never know when it could be helpful
1

Btw yes we spell words as we write them which I find well better than having umm I dont know how are they called things, instead saying just plain words as they are will be challenge for you as native English speaker.

Learn the language that the Amish speak!
I grew up in Amish country, so I know it (kinda like German)
I guarantee you, if you talk it to a guy around my place, you would surprise them
If you don't want to learn a normal language try a coding language (Java or C# is my recommendation)

1
Surprised no one said dragon yet.

For me, Indonesia is My Primary Language, English is My Second Language. My Suggest to learn second language is Indonesia.
1
Serbian, thats interesting.
1
See normally I would go with Serbian or Croatian, but I'm going to have to go with my own language (Macedonian).
Here's my reasoning:
-For someone who speaks English as a native language it's like being thrown into the darkest pits of Mordor and being forced to do something, so it provides a very tough challenge.
-Out of all the languages I know from the Balkan region this is honestly the hardest. Once you know this you'll know Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, even Bulgarian to an extent.
-Slovenian group languages are very different from anything else. The up side of this is that you write the words as they are spoken so "здраво" (hello) is pronounced exactly the same as it's written.

I went to Macedonia a while back and I fell in love with Macedonian language. While it sounds harsh sometimes, I just love the accent. But, if you're interested in learning a language spoken in Balkans, I would recommend Albanian (#shamelesslyadvertisingmyowncountry). It's a language that is different from every other language and one of the oldest language (according to some studies, the 2nd oldest language). It's a mix of Latin and Slavic languages. It's fun and not THAT hard to learn, but it won't really be that useful, so you want to keep that in mind.
1
I never tought I would find so many people here with nearly same language!
Nikad nisam sumnjao da ću naći toliko ludi ovde sa skoro istim jezikom!

What Foxy said, but if you just want to learn another language, learn Latin.

The best second language to learn depends on things like where you live (or will live), what work field you're in (or will be in), etc

Sign language is a great second language that more people should know.
I'm taking it for my high school foreign language (yes, it counts as one).

This might be unusual. Guarani. It's a Native South American Language. It's one of the two official languages here in Paraguay, along with Spanish. It's not very hard, but it's pretty weird. 6 vowels; /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/ and, wait for it, /ɨ/. "/ɨ/" is written as "/y/". It can be pretty fun, if a bit confusing at first.
I've been told that it sounds a bit like Japanese. Your mileage may vary on this. I've also been told that the grammar is very English-like. My mileage varies on this.
Here's Wikipedia on Guarani. It's pretty neat.
Oh, also, knowing a bit of Spanish can be helpful. Loan words and all. Like Caballo = Horse = Kavaju (Pronounced Kah-Vah-Jooh or something)
Oh, and some fun facts here. English loaned some words from Guarani, namely Jaguar, from Jaguarete, Piranha, from Pira Aña, Tapir, from Tapira, etc.
Here's some Guarani from Wikipedia
Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Guarani:
Mayma yvypóra ou ko yvy ári iñapyty'yre ha eteĩcha tekoruvicharenda ha akatúape jeguerekópe; ha ikatu rupi oikuaa añetéva ha añete'yva, iporãva ha ivaíva, tekotevẽ pehenguéicha oiko oñondivekuéra.
(All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.)
I believe that is all. Sorry for the wall... No, not quite a wall. More like fence. Fence of text. Sorry for the fence of text.
