By the way, Jesus was proven to be alive but never some sort of a god.

Atheist Christmas's are the best you get presents for believing in nothing xD
1
I believe Jesus was the son of god...as a Christian I must spread god's word.
Um...The day will come when you die and you will be judged. Beware. Um I guess
Christmas originated as a pagan holiday, are you Pagan?
If we'd like to get technical, the Pagan's didn't celebrate Christmas, they celebrated the winter solstice, which is almost completely unrelated, though very close chronologically. The main reason that Christmas exists is because of the earlier days of Christianity in ancient Rome, where Pagan traditions were still by far the most prominent. In order to gain more approval after an emperor (Constantine, I do believe) made Christianity the mandated religion, the church ret-conned Jesus's birthday to December 25 and created a holiday similar to the winter solstice traditions at the time.

My family is atheist but we still participate in Christmas due to present swag.
1
I'm Athiest but I still do celebrate Christmas. It's just a tradition since I do have quite a few family members that are Christian and my parents just took it as tradition. Honestly I don't know many people in my community who celebrate it purely for the religious reasons. I think it's only popular so much because it has become a tradition and the strong Christian influence in the world keeps it going.

i have to deal with their crap and i dont care so dont be mad if i say merry christmas

You're such a Scrooge .-. I'm an Atheist, but I still celebrate Christmas.
So your Athiest and Celebrate Christmas. . . That is the Most Idiotic thing I've ever heard
You're saying I'm an idiot because I celebrate Christmas? If an Atheist celebrates Christmas, it means that they think of it as a family time for presents and trees. Honestly, friend, if brains were gold, you'd be pretty darn skint.
this^^, although im not exactly atheist, i was for a time and understand what you're saying floppy, its not just a religious thing

Athiests celebrate Christas everywhere oh my soul
But I mean if youre a religion that doesnt do Christmas thats fine

im not going to go into detail of my beliefs, only that im not christian, but i have live and grown up around Christmas and this kinda stuff, i dont see it as exclusively religious nowadays, its become more of a time to come together and celebrate, to get in the "Christmas spirit"
1
where i live christmas is less of an religional thing and more of a tradition. a lot of people with other religions than christianity celebrate it too.
1
I grew up Catholic, switched to Paganism, and I enjoy celebrating both. I do NOT like Christmas music in November though. It makes my teeth itch.
(My kids think it's pretty cool getting presents on the 21st for Solstice AND on the 25th for Christmas. Spoiled brats. Hee hee.)

I feel Christmas has transformed into a beautiful holiday, I don't feel it's just a Religious day anymore, and is more celebrated by all faiths. I feel Christmas has turned into a wonderful time where we give thanks to people around us, and a time to visit family and just celebrate the gift of giving, and acknowledgement. Stores do try to profit from the occasion, but its not all about giving physical gifts either, you can bring a smile to someones face, and warmth to their heart just by letting know you are there for them and care for them.

DivineMedicusChristmas originated from the pagan religion. The Christian faith adopted this holiday as a celebration of Jesus' birth. No one knows the real date of birth of Jesus Christ.
This. Christmas was originally a Pagan holiday related to the Winter Solstice/birth of Mithra (the two are probably related, as early religions made symbols for astrological events), and it was celebrated as this during a time where Paganism was dominant and Christianity wasn't very popular (they didn't know how to party like the Pagans ). They hijacked the holiday to get more followers.
And it's not even a "Christian" holiday anymore, but a commercial one, which is more generalized to the public. Pretty much anyone who wants to will celebrate it because they want to spend time with their families, and it doesn't need to be a religious thing. Just like how we don't celebrate Halloween today to scare off spirits, and how we don't celebrate Thanksgiving because of Plymouth Rock (which turned out horribly in the end for Native Americans). Society doesn't really care about the meaning of holidays, even if it doesn't apply anymore it'll change it and find a way to have some sort of celebration for it.
As for the "No one knows when Jesus was born", theologians have interpreted the Bible saying that the sheep were out in the fields that Jesus was born in summer or fall, because they most likely would not have let the sheep stay out in the snow.
So yeah, considering most "Christmas" symbols (tree, yule log, stockings, santa) are Paganism (specifically Germanic) mixed in with some filler fantasy (elves, Rudolph, frosty, seeming more recent lore) and commercialism, I don't see how a "Christmas" ad (toys for tots, save on gifts at Kohl's!) would bother someone. Religious ads might bother some people even if they celebrate Christmas, because those ads try to "take back" Christmas from general society (or center it around religion), because that's not what Christmas is anymore (but as I said, it wasn't originally Christian, anyways).

I'm atheist, but I do celebrate Christmas. It's fun. I celebrate it because it's a great time to be with family and do things together, not because of gods birth or whatever. I always say merry christmas and I love the holiday (just not the story behind it).

Fun fact: Jesus wasn't born in a manger, in fact, he was born in a cave. O_O

Christmas is not all about the presents it is to remind us of our savior.
1
Seeing as how this thread is about people who don't celebrate the traditional Christian/Catholic Christmas, that isn't really relevant.
1
Well then what's the point of celebrating christmas, not realising why christmas even exists...
1
I'm Jewish, Swedish, German, American, Irish, and a lot more. Oddly enough, I am an atheist. I celebrate Jewish holidays and Christian holidays, but not for the real reasons. The ads get very annoying around Halloween when they start, but the ones you can tell people worked hard on make it worth it.
1
This may be a little off topic but do Atheists say "goodbye"?
1
Why wouldn't we?
1
Well cause goodbye comes from "God be with you".
1
Goodbye originated as "god be with ye"
Christmas originated as a pagan celebration of the winter solstice, i can ask the same thing about why you even celebrate Christmas.

1
That's like asking if people say "Bless you". Of course people say it. Just because it derives from a religious meaning, does not mean we atheists wouldnt use it
1
I'm an agnostic atheist & i celebrate Christmas.
I consider Christmas really more of a family get together (and presents, of course i don't celebrate it for the christian religion but the rest of my family does so i'm kind of stuck in the middle of it.
And no, the Christmas ads are not annoying - i don't see how they are & even if they are you can just ignore them, can't you?

Dont celebrate christmas but I love the holiday season
1
I'm agnostic, so I don't really celebrate Christmas in the traditional, religious sense. For me, it's not a Christian holiday so much as a time to be close to family.
The Christmas ads and whatnot don't really bug me, and if they did, I'd probably learn to ignore them. If you live in America, there are bound to be a lot of Catholics and Christians, so companies go a bit heavy on the Christmas stuff around the holidays since it appeals to a larger audience. Even then, Santa and Christmas trees aren't part of the traditional Christmas anyway. It's not like the ads have baby Jesus in a manger.

devilcupcakesYou're excited, I get it. Now stop being so festive... it's just a holiday.
1
You still get presents if you are not Christian. My friends are Atheist and they get a ton of presents. They just dont believe the Jesus stuff.
1
It's not that an Atheist doesn't believes in 'Jesus Stuff' when you're an atheist you KNOW that it's not true, and there is a BIG difference from knowing and believing. Just wanted to point that out, any how i do celebrate christmas even though my whole family is atheists, i mean... who doesn't like presents aye' xD
1
I am an atheist and i celebrate christmas to. We do not celebrate it though cause we are like (Jesus Was Born) but just for the fun of it.
Nothing different also there are thousands of religions dont expect everyone who dont celebrate christmas be an atheist. That would be kinda racist.

My family is Jewish but I'm atheist. I HATE Christmas. So annoying. You're excited, I get it. Now stop being so festive... it's just a holiday.
1
No need to be a jerk because you don't celebrate what we do (me and my family aren't religious, and we celebrate Christmas).
1
dont worry, i went though that phase, hopefully it will pass and he will see that Christmas is more than a religious thing
1
I'm atheist also, i hate drawing Christmas things, full row of presents on paper FTW. its annoying, also all the ads so many ads.
1
You need to start living a happier life my friend, it's not about gifts and all that sh....migma, it's about hanging out with the people you love, getting to know them a little better. You only have one life to live, live it well.
1
I'm atheist, too! XD Christmas is SOOOOO annoying! I hate in art class when they make me do something related to Christmas!
1
You're such a Scrooge .-. I'm an Atheist, but I still celebrate Christmas.
1
same here
1
Same here. The concept of Christmas is wonderful. Everyone is having a great time, there's great food, giving and receiving. I don't think people should think of Christmas as a religious holiday ( mean, Jesus wasn't even born in december... If I ever have kids, then I'm pretty sure that we'll still celebrate Christmas.
