Okay in 2011 the scientists studied and discovered a new planet.
its called kepler 22b and it may be inhabitable for humans because the planet is earth like but it has a much more larger land mass then earth . The planet has a green blue atmosphere almost like earth but it has day and night all the time on one part of the planet on kepler itis dark all the time and the other part is light. The land mass on this planet is almost like earth I mean it has volcanoes like earth and white clouds like earth. Butthe planet has light and dark side more then how earth has a light and dark side.
earth has a light and dark side going on both sides of the planet all the time every 24 hours. While on kepler it does not workthat way.
on kepler the gravity and atmosphere pressure is habitable and it has oceans across the planet as well. It has ice and it gets heat. The planet has continents and higher and lower land masses.
scientists do not know if kepler has life but they are soon to find out.
kepler has a dwarf star as well earth has a moon and a sun not a dwarf star.
no one knows if there are plants on this new planet.
if they found plants from kepler they would need to be taken back to earth for examination and further study.
the atmosphere may or may not be always breathable for humans but no one knows?
mars is another planet that is a cold dry desert that has no rain what so ever.
its not habitable for humans because its totally un breathable air or gas there.
mars gets daylight and dark periods different to earth as earth is larger then mars.
but kepler is larger then earth.

Humans gotta find a habitable planet to travel to or else we will all die when the sun becomes a red giant star in a few billion years and destroys the earth.

it's pretty awesome that plants (cotton and potatoes, I think) are being successfully cultivated on the moon

we cant work towards colonising another part of the solar system/galaxy/wutever until people can learn to live together on the one planet we have, our currently political climate and state of the world shows we are not capable of running one planet let alone two, it would take the effort of more than one country to work together to achieve this goal

It would take 23.4 million years to reach Kepler 22b using modern space travel. Considering the oldest fossil records of Homo Erectus are about 1.8 million years old that means it would take well over 10x the duration our species has existed in order to reach this planet. Kepler 22b may as well be in another reality unless mankind makes a radical new development in inter-stellar travel that is not only capable of light-speed travel but also doesn't require fuel or has the capability to make fuel as it travels. Even if we could travel at the speed of light it would take 600 years to reach this planet and a ship carrying humans would go through so many generations during its journey that no one who set foot on the surface of the planet would even remember earth.

I can see this happening.
humans land on a distant alien planet. They bring there ships to the planet and colonize the world.
the alien world appears as a large desert and the humans begin exploring on a rover.
they take pictures.
suddenly they find an area with strange trees.
these trees are alive but they dont operate the same as trees on earth.
then a strange creature is found on these trees.
and suddenly the humans go near the creatures and they find traces of these strange giant slug like creatures.
then the creatures spit this acid on them then they will know what I said now fore warned.

The fore warnings about alien life are there and they exist.
humans are going to either accept the truth of these warnings or not.

While humans do need a plan B when earth can no longer support us all, I think (As Gilran mentioned) that the biggest problem is time, and how much we have of it.
