I love the guy, he’s kinda cute. I also love the free leashes and llamas.

He's more like a wandering bat to me. Useless but with two free lead and a bit of leather.
They are kind of annoying. Sometimes they have a trade you might want (Pointed dripstone being one in my opinion). Most of the time for me though they are a source of free leads and leather.

the WT seems like a holdover kluge from console editions where the world size limitation might make some biomes (sometimes ones needed to obtain certain resources) literally unavailable.
Oddly, the WT was also added more or less as MS/Mj started the push to nerf various forms of farming [including villager trading] and/or to push world exploration. "Oddly" because one of the main effects of the WT is to limit or eliminate the need to find certain bioms.
