I would give Little Witch Academia a watch if you Netflix. To this date it has been one of my favorite anime thanks to its beautiful colors and animation, music score, and a story I found pretty heartwarming.

I really recommend Elfen Lied! I really enjoyed it and have seen it so many times, the manga is better though, imo

I recommend Blue Exorcist.

Don't watch SAO. Pretty art style, but awful. The main character is untouchable and underage girls just throw themselves at him. And just when you think the season's over, it launches into a typical maiden in despair story.
Plus the game doesn't even make sense.
4/10 art was pretty

A really good one I've watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. There's some really good plot twists that still keep the story reasonable. Another one I'm in the middle of watching is called Durarara!! (yes, even with the exclamation points). No idea what Claymore and Darker Than Black are, Death Note seems a bit too edgy to me, only watched the first episode of Elfin Lied and it was weird, and I've heard Sword Art Online sucks.

For the love of god, if you watch SAO, watch only till the main SAO world, save yourself.

Almost all of these are edgy, dark, horror themed anime. Only one I'd recommend is Sword Art Online. There are a lot of different genres of anime though and much better choices out there. I just don't care for shows with only three colors (black, red, and ghostly pale white) that try too hard to be spooky or weird. If you like horror movies and stuff maybe you'd like those anime she recommends. Just don't be fooled into thinking all anime is like the one niche genre your friend seems to be into. There are comedy anime, action anime, romance anime, serious anime, etc. If you're getting into anime I would recommend you go with whatever genre(s) you already prefer with other tv shows. Also, far as horror anime go, Paranoia Agent is the anime most of these other shows wish they could be.
