I see it as a person putting their hands up.

That’s a new one. Absolutely brilliant!

Who actually does read it as "laugh out loud"?! Seriously though, I sometimes add more to the "lols" by just making it longer such as "Lololololol" which wouldn't make sense if read it as "laugh out loud".
2
Must mean you're laughing out loud out loud out loud out loud if you read it like that...So practically screaming in laughter.

My grandma thought it meant "Lots of love." We all thought it was funny, so no one told her...
Then she posted on FB to someone clearly grieving, "Sorry about the loss of your husband. Lol"
I'm still lol'ing about it.

Just imagine instead of putting lol you had to write laughed out loud. I just laughed out loud for no apparent reason. *Laugh out loud, Laugh out loud and Laugh out loud* I think someone would lose their mind.

Literally "lol". I use it more as an expression of amazement than as what it originally meant.
When pronounced a little differently you get "lul" which also simply is an expression of amazement to me.

"lul" is a 'curse' word in dutch.
2
Oh okay xD
Good to know that.
Is it a very bad or not so bad curse word?

Hard to explain, really.
Some people may find it very rude while others just see it as a body part.

Ha, I just let Google translate "lul" and it worked xD
So, now I know which body part it describes. It's medium rude I would say.

Medium rude sounds right. It really depends how someone uses it.

It sort of lost it's meaning to me. I know "lol" is laugh out loud, but people (at least from what I've seen) have really been using it in more of a sarcastic sense. Mainly when there's a lot of irony at hand :p

Why not both?

"comrades, this man is clearly delusional. take him to infirmary"

It varies intermittently for me, sometimes it is 'lol' and other times it is 'laugh out loud', it usually depends on the context and the person I am speaking to on how I read it.
1
you know my brain processes "jk" as "just kidding"
but at the same time it doesn't process "lol" as "laugh out loud"
why does it happen? idk
