Even if you are really good with a hunting rifle in real life, it does not mean you will be good with a sniper rifle in video games.

Resourcefulness is more important than you may think.

...Also that not everyone you meet is going to be super nice, sadly. :/

Be patient, you don't always win and that's fine.

God, it's so ground into me by now that anyone who rages either freaks me out or makes me laugh.

Be nice to all players (especially children), have your own back, and agree to random VoIP parties on occasion. It could change your life.

players are part cookies :p

no but to be serious that players will go out of their way to blame someone (on games such as League of Legends) if it means they think they'll get less harsh feedback.

for ex. having (toxic) player go like 1 kill, 15 deaths, they'll blame support for 'not healing them' or anything or talking about how it was totally the jungles fault.
or just sit in all chat and talk about how they're not 'playing seriously'.

ive experienced both.
so, the lesson is to not do things that are stressful, and not to be scared of disliking toxic people. its okey.

Mine is that not everyone is who they seem to be. I used to be a massive fan of meeting friends online and then talking to them on Skype or Teamspeak.

However, like people in real life, they are not all as they seem and I should be very careful with who I trust and tell my feelings to but that's the point of meeting new people is to find out what they are like and what they are capable of doing.

But it's not all doom and gloom, some of the people who I thought never really did like my company are my closest friends to this day. It's amazing how strong an internet relationship can be compared to a real life one. It just sucks that the people you want to meet the most live so far away.

This may sound weird, but the most important lesson I think I've learned from gaming is that sometimes it's OK to quit.

Obviously some things are too important, and you shouldn't give up just because things get hard sometimes, but not everything really matters that much, and there's no real reward for struggling. A game is supposed to be fun. If it's not, you don't have to just keep bashing your head into the obstacle over and over and over again getting frustrated and annoyed, you can just quit, and that's OK.

This lesson carries over into real life. Sometimes we get wrapped up trying to do something just because we don't want to fail and we can end up wasting so much time and energy on working at something that we don't even really like. It's important to learn to step back and evaluate whether or not what we're working so hard towards is really worth it. If it isn't, it's OK to quit. Just give up and start heading in a new direction that you might actually enjoy. Don't fall for the "sunk cost" fallacy that just because you've invested a lot of time and effort already you have to keep investing more and more of yourself into something that isn't worth it.

The most shocking fact I learned from playing online games is that players can scam you! I couldn’t believe it the first few times I got tp-killed, betrayed, and robbed of my stuff. At first, I came up with excuses for it— they made a mistake— I scared them— there must’ve been some kind of misunderstanding! But eventually, I accepted reality: people can and will exploit you, especially (but not only) online.

Many video games over many years have taught me many life lessons. To list a few:
  • How to perform a heart transplant, courtesy of Surgeon Simulator.
  • How to defend your land from invaders, courtesy of Bloons Tower Defense.
  • How to tell good mushrooms from bad ones (the good ones have spots on them), courtesy of Super Mario Bros.
  • How to throw darts, courtesy of Bloons Tower Defense.
  • How to fire a gun, courtesy of that one gun app on the iPhone.
  • How to start a successful banana farm and business, courtesy of Bloons Tower Defense.
  • How to start a worldwide, multi-billion dollar bakery business, courtesy of Cookie Clicker.
  • How to properly cook human flesh, courtesy of Bloons Tower Defense.
And last but not least,
  • How to cross the road, courtesy of Frogger.

Careful planning and proper preparation beget success. [Not always :( , but the way the smart money bets.]

Despite which, the famous Lefty Gomez quote ["I'd rather be lucky than good"] has something to be said for it.
