I would recommend Unity 5 as you can make 3D or 2D games with it, come with lots of addons that you can add (duh!) and its free! There are loads of tutorials and if you want I could help you as I've made 2D and 3D games if you do choose to use Unity 5
(If you need a link here is the download: https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive
I would also recommend this guy for tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyBsvs ... iBZIYXvnyg )

If you're going for 3D, you definitely want Unity or Unreal. Gamemaker technically has 3D, but it is extremely obnoxious to use and simply not worth your time.

Ok so, i think im going to try out unity cause i found a really good a long tutorial for what im wishing to make. But don't let that stop you from your suggestions! Please let me know what engine you think i can use!
Remember, im trying to make a 3D RPG somewhat like final fantasy 3 on PC or my fave 3DS game Fantasy life. use those as examples of what im trying to make.

Alright, thanks for the sugestions guys! ill defor take a look at a few of these and see which is best for me, But to answer a question that was asked, i want to try to make a 3D rpg kinda like the older final fantasy remakes that are on PC. So can any say an engine i can use for that? cause ik ace and VX cant do that, neither can game maker.

Camomano99Unreal engine became free at their Unreal 4 release (shortly after Unity 5 was released, I wonder why..). If you can't program to save your life (like me), Unreal has a visual scripting system like gamemaker does, though that of Unreal is of course a lot more complex. However, in terms of money (lets assume you care), Unity is the better option, since they don't care until you make more than $100.000 per year as stated before, and once you do, you have to buy the $1500 license.
Just to add on it: Unreal on the other hand wants a 5% Royalty for every sold copy.

That is extremely small print.
The print isn't really that small i needed to use simg because if i used img it wouldn't fit.

Only engine I've ever used is Unity. Though it's not optimised for 2D creation.
Making your own engine is pretty good for your e-peen, but you need a lot of experience to be able to do that, not to mention you need to make yourself some visual representation to design levels and the likes.
If you're not ridiculously experienced then Unity is a good starting point.

If you want to make a 2D Earthbound-style RPG, go with RPG Maker VX Ace, no doubt it. Easy to use and to create own resources.
With a little coding (or downloading a script from the Internet) you can also make action RPGs, or pretty much any 2D RPG out there.
Download the free Eternal Senia on Steam for a taste of what a little scripting in RPG Maker VX Ace can change.
However, if you're not on the lookout for classic turn based RPGs, try GameMaker, or if you are very experienced, Unity3D 5. Both Unity3D 5 and GameMaker are free, but they require coding experience.
Have fun.

Don't use an engine. Do it properly (aka without one) with more control over what you're doing.

eheheh
ehehe
ehhh
BS.
That would mean having to code the physics system, lighting system, movement and controls systems completely from scratch. Also, please give me an example of the most recent quality game that was made without an engine.
Don't think there is one, other than Minecraft of course, and we all know how badly optimised minecraft is (it takes more out of my PC than games like Dishonored, Dark Souls II and the likes, which were all made with engines). It also took them nearly 4 years to get to a point where it's becoming a quality game in actual game design terms.
Anyway, the OP asked for an easy way. Unity and Unreal are already on the edge of difficult if you compare it to gamemaker and the likes.
Btw, OP, maybe take a look at Construct 2. Its another "engine" that is considered very easy. Its meant for game artists, who usually cannot program in the SLIGHTEST.

Prison Architect has its own engine. Made by Introversion.

Ok, that is a moderately succesfull game, with 250.000 people showing interest over a period of 3 years. Thing is, it took them 3 whole years to make that game. Had they been using an engine, such as Unity, for this, I'm fairly certain they could have been halfway through Beta by now instead of still being in alpha.
Oh, and on another note, Cities Skylines is another architecture based game. Made with Unity.

Maybe Unity or Unreal Engine, I believe they are both free and professional

If you can program in C# or are willing to learn, Unity is your thing. Unity 5 is pretty high quality, significantly better than Unity 4.

Exactly, which is a lot less attractive than Unity. So Unity 5 is ideal for a beginning game designer, while Unreal is good for games with complex systems due to their visual scripting option, as that allows you to see the execution flow.
