1.16 and 1.17

I started playing in 1.16

1.34.4

Other: 1.12
Added only the parrot and various color options.
Barring some chunk loader griefing in 1.12.2, I don't recall it breaking anything.
(Probably the most controversial change was the addition of the recipe book.)

Anything BUT 1.21.5, they got rid of classic Minecraft for corporate greed! And only after the only remaining spark of hope with 1.21.4!

First they added farm animal variants which are pretty pointless. Then they made all of the leaves fall from the trees all the time which is ridiculous because it takes away the essence of old minecraft and it looks as if it's fall all the time or all trees are constantly dying. And not to mention leaf litter which does the same thing and is very annoying. They had not ONE, but TWO resource pack formats JUST change the leaf litter model, which happens to stuff ALL THE TIME in resource packs, without changing the pack format!
And then they ruined the desert. RUINED IT. DRY GRASS, EVERYWHERE! Sure, in your real life dry grass is common in deserts including the Sahara, but not THIS common! THIS IS JUST STUPID! EVERYWHERE I look, nothing but pure greed and capitalism! And not to mention the LUDICROUS cactus flowers! That dumb useless new sound and everything, the way it sticks out like a sore thumb! And so are new wolf sounds! The ONLY, and I mean ONLY thing good to come out of the update were larger Pale Gardens. Not even improved Wandering Traders could cheer us up. This update, which goes by the ABSOLUTE HIDEOUS name of "GAME DROP", is solely reckoning and the door to a new dark age of Minecraft. Pack your bags, people, and watch helplessly as the community is torn by update hatred and chicken jockeys.

Yes, the update was purely visual and kinda ruined sand farming. It didn't add any new features too.
However, this is probably more of a laziness issue, instead of a greed one IMO.

I'd not seen anything about a weird pack format, could you provide a link to documentation? (MS/Mj is doing their usual 'stellar' job keeping documentation up to date.)
This seems by far the most egregious issue of which I have yet to hear.
I agree about desert grass (apparently finding something for the art department to do trumps keeping the game looking good). Making the deserts less resource poor just moves them to being more like the plains biomes.
(If I'm reading the wiki correctly — and if the wiki got it right — the cactus flower won't break cactus farms which makes it considerably less of an issue. Having a direct source of each of the dye colors seems to be one of the goals MS/Mj has set for themselves… the benfits of "aiming low", I guess)
Leaf litter had me so excited i might snore, but the constant new particles just beg for a tweak to remove them (and hopefully the useless lag they represent.)
On stupid update name I'm willing to give them a pass — most of the previous updates have gotten more descriptive nicknames than the official anyway….
Overall, most of the changes seem like readily ignorable bright shiny objects to keep what seems to be the demographic forming the growing focus of MS/Mj buying new 'merch' on a twice yearly basis leavened with just enough actually interesting bits to avoid wholesale abandonment by the grognard players.

Umm, what happened in 1.21.5?
Could you please explain a bit?
Could you please explain a bit?

Wait, they did????

I'd be inclined to see that as a slow decline rather than a sharp break…
What specifically in 1.21.5 was the tipping point for you?

1.14 is truly a really good one

1.13? 1.14? 1.16? 1.17? 1.20? 1.21?
OH MY GOSH IT'S SO DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE </3

In recent memory, its been 1.16 for me. Favorites change with time so if something better comes along change I'll my mind.
I'd like like to make a case for Cave game tech test since its the ancestor of all updates. But its not a version you would download, and want to play. Still important otherwise since its, the beginning.

Why did no one vote for the combat update???

1.9 was a lot more than combat:
End cities
Mending
Blaze powder for brewing
2x2 pixel unconnected glass panes
Loot tables
water carrying items across hoppers
etc., etc.
chances are any specific player hated at least one of the changes

Cuz the new combat (in comparison) kinda sucks

The Nether Update weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Zomphey tried to swim in lava

Common enough choice, but I still contend my meta-nether would have been better…

To each their own

Pale garden update

All the April Fools updates!

Hot & cold
Lots of these were great fun, but I don't think any would have been viable for my playstyle long-term
