I'm really confused, is it some phrase that Americans have put into use or is it just a translation from speech to word?

Why? Because social psychology states that if a lot of people around them do it, they'll do it themselves. Therefore, everyone does it and everyone who doesn't eventually does.

OK now that's just mean
I know of many Americans(myself included)who aren't "Lazy morons" and don't train kids to be "Lazy morons" and we DO pay attention to grammar and spelling!
The truth isn't always nice. In fact, it's never nice. And I said "For the most part," and "riddled." I didn't say that all Americans are like this, or even imply it. The majority of Americans, however, are, and it makes the rest of us look bad.
TehFluffehKittenI don't see the problem in a small typo/mistake! Everyone has mistakes! JEEZE! you guys must have nothing better to do that correct a common mistake that people make
There's a difference between a small typo/mistake and complete ignorance. When the vast majority of a country are ignorant, it makes a bad impression on the rest of the country. We're judged, not as individuals; but as an entire country, when it comes to world affairs: and I, for one, am getting sick of it.
DoggleIts American English.
No, it's not. Even in American English, it's "should have."

SilverKyttenPURE0WNAGESilverKyttenBecause America (For the most part) is riddled with lazy morons, who've had children and taught them to be lazy morons (etc, etc.). They can't be arsed to pay attention to spelling and grammar, because it's "not cool."
well im not trying to be offensive or something in any way but your acting like u hate america? do u?
America as a whole, no. But the people who live here, yes.

Its American English. Most people now a days, especially online use American English, as it is hard to notice most differences between American English and Traditional English. Words like hounour, gaol, specialise and such are all Traditional English words. Traditional English is what we normally speak, American English is lazy, incorrect and generally easier English. It tries to make more sense in words which it does, but it does not follow traditional lines.
In most official or prestigious jobs (outside of America) you are expected to know and use Traditional English in writing, so Politics, Law and such. If you spell gaol - jail - in your law school tests, you will get marked down and such. I know this as my mum was a lawyer, and yes! Americans use mom as it sounds more correct for them as their accents made it sound like such so eventually they changed it, but originally it was mum.

Q: Why do people correct others grammar online?
I don't often correct other people's grammar(that's usually when I make a huge mistake lol), but bad spelling still irks me.
It's just that English is a standard. You can invent your own language and just use that, but no one would understand you. I judge professionalism based on how well you use a standard(like English). How likely are you to get a job if you mis-spelled half of your resume?
And uh, +1 to SilverKytten's response.

Think about this: You sign on to an elite group of engineers, and they tell you to always build something a specific way. You tell them that you and your "High School Engineers Club" has always done it a different way, and so you continue to do it your own way because you feel justified to do so. How is this elite group likely to look at you? Probably not very well. You have to drop your habits and always be learning better standards.

Sigh... I realize that I am one of those Americans who says "should of" other than "should have."

Q:Why do people look down on other people?
A:I believe (as well as others) negative people judge and verbally attack others due to what is missing in their own lives and heart. It's just an attempt to make them feel superior; lame isn't it?
Q: Why do people correct others grammar online?
A: The main reason people are harsh is that they have low self-esteem or are insecure, and so they feel better about themselves when they put someone else down. When people have self-respect, then they usually are able to exhibit empathy and respectful behavior towards others.

gogocpShould've = Sounds more like should of.
This. Saying it out loud makes it sound like a different word, which is why many ignoramuses also spell it "shud."
1
...I'm an American, and yet I have fairly good grammar, everyone should be teaching their kids how to tell good from bad. It's should've not should have.
1
Dude.. Really?
Should've means should have.
Should've means should have.
1
I thought I was good at english, but you actually confused me too!
[I thought "should of" was a real thing... oops]

Western Europe has their fair share of idiots too.
1
Because...
Should have = should've (shortened)
Should've = Sounds more like should of.
Should have = should've (shortened)
Should've = Sounds more like should of.
1
Should have has the potential , to sound like Should Of.
that's why.
that's why.
1
Its shorter to type.
