I had the same issue, I fixed it by backing up my worlds and screenshots, and then deleting the .minecraft folder in %appdata%, afterwards let the launcher re-download everything.

I believe that error is from having a nickname longer than 16 characters

The server has only 6 characters, which is only my username for all apps...how could that be possible?
