Can animals (such as llamas or horses) suffocate themselves?

This might be the dumbest question on this site but I'm embarrassingly invested in the well being of my minecraft pets and need closure that they won't kill themselves by doing things like walking into tree leaves.
thx. :>

Tree leaves and glass can't suffocate any entity. But! Nether portals are great pet killing machines. Usually a horse or llama can't get into places where they will be suffocated my themselves. There has to be some sort of player action to help suffocate the animal.

Tree leaves cannot suffocate mobs and so can't glass, slabs and other blocks like trapdoors.
Solid blocks like pistons, dirt and stone can.
