While going through some old posts, I saw this was still up, believing it lost with the migration of Site Discussion & Support with Tickets. Since it's still here, I might as well bring this up-to-date.

First and foremost, be sure to follow Microsoft-Mojang's Terms of Service as well as their End User Agreement License.

What the Launcher should look like,

This is the new minecraft launcher, these steps will not work with the legacy launcher.

Step One: Adding New

On the top-right part of the launcher, you should see three white bars that open up the options menu. Click that and select Launch Options as demonstrated here

From there, click it until you see an option to Add New as you can see here

Creating the Configuration

Now that you have done that you should have this screen

Rename the instance to whatever you want to call it, as long as you remember what one it is. Moving on, if you click the drop-down menu below you can select which version of the game, Like this:

Step Three: Finish and Save

Thanks to the changes they have made, it is a much more simple process of managing your Minecraft Versions, so hopefully this basic explanation is enough to show you how to downgrade your client and enjoy the wonders of Minecraft classic, and before any of the various updates we have now had ever existed.

Do not accept any jars or mods that promote to downgrade your Minecraft client as they may be dangerous and contain malicious software that will damage your computer. Hope this helps you downgrade your client with ease. Good Luck, Miners!
