How do you add an nbt tag to a held/dropped item item

I've got a custom item but I don't know how to add an nbt tag to the item in the command block so I was wondering if anyone could help with a command to add an nbt tag to a held/dropped item so I could add a cit to it

A custom nbt tag with a value like {some_nbt:1}? Or an nbt tag with /tag?
