I created the server by following this video's instructions https://youtu.be/3hWV4tY_nd4

this video showed me how to port forward https://youtu.be/fkBAJNLKIFQ

I have a Motorola SBG6580 Router which was different than the one in the video.

Everything went well and my brother used his pc to log into my server, but when I sent the external ip to my friends they said they couldn't log in and got this message io.netty.channel.abstractchannel$annotatedconnectexception

I'm not sure what im doing wrong.
I tried to find a reason why and found this post, but got nothing conclusive out of it.
can someone please help me solve this problem?

the Motorola SBG6580 Router interface looks like this

I filled out everything the port is 25565 for both

I used cmd and typed ipconfig to find my IPv4 local address.

I found my external ip by searching up whats my ip in google.

I left the description blank and set the type to both. I then enabled it. but it didn't let other people outside my network to join.

I allowed minecraft access through my firewall both public and private and it still doesn't work.

It's possible that it's blocked by your internet provider if that Motorola router was given to you by your ISP. I have Optimum and had to replace my main Optimum/Altice router with a Linksys one from Staples before I could connect with an external IP. When ISPs give you routers they may block things like port forwarding and incoming connections to the server like that. This could be the issue so if possible you may want to get your own router and not use the ISP one. Replacing the internet router shouldn't upset the ISP. However please know that replacing the router may change the IP addresses of some devices on the network, but apart from that you should be good. It may also be a firewall or anti-virus issue, so you may want to check those as well.

Here is the popular website - Portforward.com - it shows exactly the same config options for port forwarding for your router :

I've looked online for the router model you specify and found this page :
https://arris.secure.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/SBG6580-Port-Forwarding-Setup/?l=en_US&fs=RelatedArticle

The second picture down on this page is the kind of option I would expect to see for port forwarding. Having an External port to fill in is unusual, and since this page is saying its your router, either its a different firmware, or someones on the wrong config option.
