To go off of this, the reason why you get higher ping is because instead of a direct connection pinging from you to the server, a vpn would make your ping bounce to the vpn's place and then to the server, then back again. More distance to transfer packets
Additionally, servers dont like vpns as they can circumvent ip bans

and vpns just give you less servers to join because most cant be joined with a vpn

VPNs will make your ping even higher, as your packets have to connect to the vpn server, and then to the minecraft server
