What the heck are observer blocks?
Ok, so most of you probably know what observer blocks are. But not me. I may be a great redstoner, but the only thing I have heard about observer blocks is that they detect blocks that are in front of it. But other than that, I don't have a clue.

As others have said, it's basically a BUD switch block. Before they were added, we had to make use of quirks in redstone mechanics in order to detect block updates.

BUD: Block Update Detector. It will give power when the block in front changes into another block or when a block updates it's data value. Some examples are a redstone ore lighting up, a furnace cooking, crops growing, ice melting, removing or adding a flower in a flower pot, and lots more.

They emits a redstone signal when an adjacent block is updated. Such as Sugar Cane growing and Pistons. That's all.
