I need YOU to give design & balance feedbackfavorite
Hey PMC forumers,
I'm Macchu, developer of the Attrition data pack since 2020. Very briefly, what this data pack does is: 1) dying removes a heart of max health, 2) eating an enchanted golden apple gives back a heart of max health*, and 3) losing all of your hearts of max health equals permadeath. Basically, I made Lifesteal SMP before it was cool :)
Anyways – I'm here to collect feedback on part 2 of this data pack, because it's becoming very difficult to balance correctly. Here are some potential options; read through them, vote, and comment!
OPTION 1 is for enchanted golden apples to give back a heart of max health, guaranteed every time. Until May 2024, this was how Attrition was balanced.
To be honest, I feel like Option 3 is the most realistic option long-term, but I need reassurance that it actually fits the game and won't feel like a bootleg modded Minecraft feature. Also, if you thought of something other than these three options that you think could work, comment below :D

- PROS Simple & elegant from a game design perspective. Intuitive for the player.
- CONS Unbalanced. Enchanted golden apples are getting way too easy to farm (Ancient Cities and especially now Trial Chambers), so much so that Mojang recently downgraded their rarity from Epic to Rare.
- PROS Fairly well balanced from a difficulty perspective. Does not interfere too much with the "vanilla feel" of the data pack.
- CONS Unintuitive for players. Eating an enchanted golden apple but not getting back a heart can be a frustrating experience.
- PROS Easy to balance difficulty-wise. Decently intuitive for the player.
- CONS Interferes somewhat with the "vanilla feel" of the data pack.

how about you get a heart back, if you eat an ench apple while having the effects ench apples give you?
So you have to eat one to "prep" and the others for the heart.
Would incentivise not eating them right when you get them and if you want to you could just get all the effects from potions and gapples? Would be more effort but give you more hearts back.
Might not feel 100% vanilla but i kinda like the idea

this is the kind of idea that gets me thinking, very creative. Thank you for sharing :D

you could edit out or make it less common in chest loot tables for the enchanted golden apple, to make it closer to original but still updated.
Anyway you do it goodluck MacchuPicchu!

I might test it later but it reminds me of this old ARG I saw that takes place in a forked version of minecraft where there's scrapped gamemode where you only have 1 heart... for some reason.
