I was planning on making the Tripods from War of the Worlds into vanilla Minecraft.

Depends on how you implement them;
the heat ray in particular has the potential to be problematic (especially if it also starts fires), but the guardian laser mechanics may offer some useful guidlines
the black smoke (which gets considerably less attention in most of the movie adaptations) may be too strong in the form described in the book (and adding it may violate 'niche protection' for the ender dragons' breath)
with ghasts being 4x4x4 (plus tentacles) size might need to be reduced from the book's depiction (and the legs should definiitely be part of the hit box).
As long as you're aware of these sorts of issues, you might as well give it a go — the result might come out quite well
