I mean it would be cool but it all feels SO out of place. The texture looks like a mod and why is it way more detailed than the normal ghast? The name and it with goggles looks super goofy. People say that its cute but it definitely doesn't feel like it to me? The ghastling stage when you hydrate it is super cuteeee but when it grows to the middle stage its just weird. Speaking of the hydration process, it just feels odd. If I haven't seen it, I wouldn't believe they wanna add something like that. It makes some sense for MC lore, as the ghast should originate from the overworld (uneasy alliance advancement confirms but Xatrix haven't made lore video on it yet, his theories are canon for me. Nothing against matthew patthew or other guys but they like to make up stuff, not overanalize everything from the mc games). Also, if they really wanna make it pick-up-able, make it an entity that will get in your inventory as an item when you right click it. Not a block. It also defeats the point of scaffolding or resin blocks which were literally added in the last update. It also has no challenge to it, you go to nether, grab it, place it and you got it.
If they really wanted to make it a rideable ghast, this is my idea: Make the first stage the baby ghast from MC dungeons, maybe found somewhere in a cage like in bastions (which would make sense as we have seen, they use them to fly). If you rescue him you can tame him and you got a lil cute cube made of few pixels :D make it maybe shoot micro fireballs or something, or just be cute. Then you could feed it something to make it grow to the ghastling stage, which could also do something special. Maybe this would be the stage for single person riding. Then, again, feed or mutate or something it, and you got the happy ghast (change the name and texture!) for 4 people :D
Everything here is just my opinion, feel free to think something else. You can share it in comments :) Also ye, I'm a professional complainer

I mean, it's not a bad idea, but I just think it would have fit more better in like Minecraft Legends or Minecraft Dungeons, you know.

It strikes me as having at least a germ of a good idea, but that the implementation was driven by getting the typical 6 yo the ability to do something near what the movie shows…

It's almost as if they want us to remember that a certain movie exists, while refusing to admit how terrible it is.

Reading this as (at least partly) further interference from the marketing department does make a deal of sense…

i like it. while i do think getting him is a bit strange, its not bad because the idea behind is a dried ghast, not an imprisoned ghast. you know? and it actualy makes sense. The nether is a place where water cannoy exist, so giving the shriveled up ghast water seems like the correct thing to tame it. you'd also love the person who gives you water if you were dying of thirst.

While the dehydrated ghast works at some level as in game 'lore' (which is problematic in a sandbox in any case), one wonders why this was not extended to the standrad nether ghasts being able to be tamed by bringing one to another dimension and rehydrating it.
I suspect most of the objections (beyond the YMMV issue of the textures) willl arise from mechanical issues.

I mean I like it, but the saddle thing you put on it, it doesn't seem to fit in the game, just the style of the saddle, that is all.

Texture (which doesn't work for me) is easily fixable (at least in java), as is the recipe.
The mechanics, however….

TL;DR -- I only know about it from scrolling forums here, but it sounds pretty cute, just some confusing opinions about ghast lore now though....
And I assume he was announced in the minecraft live? I didn't watch yet cause busy studying magical rocks, oh did I mention there's 3 now? (kind of a problem really)
So from what I read here basically the rough idea is there's baby ghasts now, they're sad and dried up, and you find them and give them water, and then they're friendly and you can raise them until eventually they're fully-grown and rideable... Which is great, new flying pet, and they're pretty adorable too even if the texture confuses me.
But here's my issue with them, and it's kind of big depending on what sort of player you are imo, like if you don't care about block game lore then stop reading here because I'm just gonna say this-
Their new narrative that ghasts are some weird overworld mob that got lost and dried up in the nether is like insane levels of silliness, like way way above my own silliness, ghasts to me were always the physical embodiment of lost/angered souls that fell in the nether, this explains their ghost-like appearance, their aggression, the horrific screams they make, and literally everything! :O
Ghasts being from the overworld just doesn't make any sense to me, there are a total of zero flying ghost-like mobs in the overworld, so them being some overworld mob that just got trapped in the nether and dried up is just so silly.
But the other option, that the nether was once like the overworld and had plenty of water where ghasts could thrive natively without drying out or becoming aggressive is also terrible too because like the entire point of the nether is to function as Minecraft's underworld, it's meant to be dark, dreary, and filled with danger around every corner!
So while I like the idea of rideable ghasts, and I think baby ghast is adorable as a concept, I also just think giving a nether mob water is crazy.

Same, lore complications were what I disliked most about this drop.

WRT: "… ghasts to me were always the physical embodiment of lost/angered souls that fell in the nether…."
My one time (semi-humorous) take on ghasts was that they were the angry spritis of all the helpless and inoffensive squid brutally murdered for their ink sacs.
[Ghasts srike me as being somewhat similar to squid in body-form.]

I love them personally, but I really dislike the apparent crafting recipe for the dried ghast (5 bone blocks and 4 ghast tears). I hope they remove it and instead add some new interaction with ghasts that lets you get more dried ghasts.

Being able to craft them at all is weird. They should just be found only in the Soul Sand Valley where they're generated, so as to make them more valuable. You'd probably only need one on singleplayer. Even on multiplayer you won't need that many since a single ghast is supposed to let up to 4 players ride it.

Perhaps someone should point out to MS/Mj that allowing players to craft living entities could potentially be viewed as blasphemousness…😇
(If the parrot/cookie & frog/firefly events are examples, that might fix the issue right quick)
[My preference being the ability to "hydrate" any ghast.]
WRT the number needed:
Even in SSP, I would think many palyers would want a number of them, similar to horses.
In both cases, the mount is often not the preferred way to travel so having one at each major build would be more convenient (particularly true if using the HG-casper as mobile floating scaffolding).
For SMP, how 'fragile' the HG-caspers are becomes important.
Were they to be used as fighting platforms, the expected survival time mihght be quite low even if (as with skeleton horses) shooting the rider off the mount is the preferred form of engagement.
Assuming the capser achieves the sort of high general utility shown by elytra, I can see more competitive SMP play showing the same sorts of denial strategies used there.
In either case (and as the most effective may to discourage actual item-duping), allowing a renewable source of the resource seems desirable.

If that's the final recipe, it's probably too cheap for hardcore technical player servers (but still prohibitively expensive for the HG [casper] target audience…)
However, given the issue of whichever faction first gets elytra being able to use it [them] to 'corner the mraket' and prevent anyone else from obtaining one (which is a known tactic of competitive servers), there probably should be a means of obtaining the casper [HG] without needing to already have one [allay duplication] or more [breeding].
My preference (as previously noted) would be to allow hydrating any ghast into the new mob.

Sure, the textures could be better, but I LOVE THEM >:O
Like bro, I've always wanted to ride/stand on a ghast, and now I can do BOTH

i think the textures were well done, the old ghast wasn't pixel consistent and i hope they update it too with this update

Pretty sure the happy ghast isn't pixel consistent either
Also it looks way too smooth xd
Also it looks way too smooth xd

well it is, 32x resolution

There's a difference between being pixel consistent, and being visually consistent. The HG looks like something from a non-vanilla texture pack, or that the original ghast texture was mistakenly blurred in a photoshopped resize.

same

YOU ARE RESCUING GHASTS FROM HELL AND THEN THEY ARE HAPPY

One wonders if the Uneasy Alliance advancement will be retained, given the new attitude shown (Similar to how "When Pigs Fly" was dropped).

Bet there's gonna an advancement called "The Ghast Whisperer" that's gonna be added for both editions.

It will be impossible to do it now.. i just cant.. its finally home..

Oh BROTHER. I am dead afraid of them doing this too. Let's just drop the Monster Hunter advancement while we're at it, eh Mojang?
Edit: Aaaand they may just turn the old ghasts into neutral mobs to give players a hint that you can tame them. Yes, everything is just peachy in survival Minecraft!

I love it

Btw, first when I saw hydrating it I thought it was gonna turn into a baby ghast from Minecraft dungeons but the thing we got is so cute (ghastling and smiling ghast)
btw I also love the dry ghast, he looks so huggable
btw I also love the dry ghast, he looks so huggable

They're dumbing down the game for it's "child demographic." The goggles and blue harness even make the ghast look like a Minion, something that only babies would laugh at for an entire 6-movie franchise. Honestly, why does it need goggles? They don't serve any functional purpose in the game nor in any comprehensive lore. And you know Mojang was lazy when they decided to call it a "Happee Ghast! Oh so cute, Uwu!!" This whole cuteness culture has been a blight to Minecraft's update quality. If it wasn't for that, we might have not gotten that more-worthless-than-dust mob, the Sniffer.
I'm ok with having tamed ghasts added, and the idea of a flying mount that lets you build in mid-air is a fun idea. They just need to fix the name and texture, and people need to tone down their reactions to it. "OH MY GAWD!! IT'S SO ADOWABOW!!" Just shut the f*** up, you toddlers.

While I don't have [quite] the level of adverse reaction to 'kute-ifaction', I certainly agree than the changes to MC to accomidate a more childish playstyle are removing some of the important aspects of what made the game great.
2b2t's Southern Canal Association (SCA) would be unknown if its work was a 64 block long trench; it is the size and logistical complexity of the project that give it its place in server lore.
Similarly, getting 200 iron per hour from a farm used to require either serious technical skill or significant preserverence (if not both), but is now available with what is (with a bit of luck) a day one farm.
Simpler/easier does not equate to 'funner-er', and bright shiny objects all to often turn out to be five minute fun (if not just mackerels in the moonlight).

I definitely agree with you!

At this point, survival mode should be renamed to "camper mode" or "boy scout mode." That's actually a good way to describe all of those animated Minecraft Live trailers where all of the mobs (hostile included) are dancing like they're in a dated theme park riverboat ride.

i hate the face so mucb
i can live wirh the mod lookin texture but i HATE THE STUPID FACE

yeeeeeeeeeesssssss

*doesn't read description only title*
I hate the new ghast designs, I personally feel like it ruins the game and makes the nether even more scary.
I mean I'll try the game with new ghasts but if I still don't like it then I'm forever playing on 1.20

I'd like it to stay on 16x

Nah, its best for builds in survival. Using less scaffholdings

Agreed. Scaffoldings are officially useless when the ghast update comes out.

One thing the casper [HG] has not yet been shown able to do is start a build in the sky i.e. place th e first block. (There may also be something equivalent to the lillypad trick for mid ocean builds, but I've yet to see that ether.)

It's nice

guys, we can just make a better texture for it if u dislike it....
also i think they added the goggles so that u could tell if someone was riding it or not.
and if u don't like it, just don't pick up a dry ghast and soak it in water and raise it.
and if ur disappointed that they did it instead of something else, well, then be patent, there will be other updates.

1) Yep, both the critter and the harness… Minor issue at best once the thing releases.
2) This begs the question as to why it's a good idea to make whether or not an HG has a driver [not clear what effect passengers have on the goggles] easy to determine at a distance… Being able to do so limits the HG utility for PvP as well as making apparent whether a 'parked' HG may be easily ahem! borrowed…
3) Would that this attitude had been applied to treasure fishing, wither rose slime farms, etc.
4) tTrue to some degree, but feedback to guide MS/Mj awany from further 'sub-optimal uses 😇 ' of developement resources [Dare to dream] ought be ebneficial to all parties.

It feels very underwhelming. Where's the combat update? Where's the Minecraft Volume Final? Instead, they just added a retextured ghast that does absolutely nothing

I'd be happier if this critter did do abloutely nothing (like the cold/warm variants); as is, it has issues with building, game prograssion, and (being non-renewable) adds another way in which 'old' players on a server will have advantage over 'new' players.

It does so much bruh, it is insanely helpful for building

my only problem is the ghast harness texture, it's painfully generic
Mojang needs to read/watch more sci fi content at this point, or check out some mmorpg designs that are experimental by nature

Fortunately this problem is readily fixable. [As I agree it needs be fixed.]

I kinda love this new mob.

The idea of being able to ride ghasts is fine on its own, but this whole concept of you bringing the small one back to the overworld feels like something that belongs in a mod, not the main game.
