Best PC To Run MC On
Here are my system specs.... And I am finding out that I don't have enough memory to run my large "Atrocity" map. Even on reduced game settings it lags and often crash with a memory leak error. (MC runs out of memory.)
Now since my system is 32b based, the max memory I can effectively use is 2 gigs. Something to do with how XP 32 bit works....
So my question is, directed at people with newer 64 bit based systems, how's the game running for you? And what are your system specs? And what do the rest of you think would be an ideal gaming PC for MC?
Intel C2D E 6850 3.0 Ghz 1333FSB
Asus P5N72-T Premium (MB)
2 Gigs Corsair Dominator XMS2 8500 DDR2
1 TB WD Green Sata II 3/0 GB 16mb 7200 RPM (Primary)
500 Gig WD Green Sata II 3/0 GB 16mb 7200 RPM (Slave)
Coolermaster Cosmo Case
Ultranetz LSP750 SLI Ready Power Supply
EVGA 8800 GT Cards (x2 SLI configured)
Nvidia driver: 6.14.12.6099 - probably newer than these but I am too lazy to check
OS: XP Pro SP3

You can buy win 7 64 bit for about 150.00 now. Pick up a nice SSD and install that with 4 to 8 gig ram... total cost around 500.00. Buy a new 560 or 580 EVGA card and you're set!
Or build a new system from the ground up. Thats always fun. Suggest LinusTechTips over at youtube. NCIX.com also has great deals.

64-bit java will make a big difference, especially for 1.8/1.9
32-bit java you can only allocate a maximum of 1GB (java will not actually use any more)
Suggestions:
Upgrade to 4GB+ RAM
Reinstall a 64-bit OS, with 64-bit java.
Consider allocating 2GB RAM to minecraft client.

Your suggestions can't really be done unless he gets a whole new computer setup.

What?
Buy a 2GB stick of RAM, and install a 64-bit OS? That is very far from the cost and effort of buying a brand new system

It runs fine on my 486, Don't know why so many people are having problems.
Also, that MB you have was a bad design by ASUS. They used cheap parts from china and I believe the bulk of the boards were made in Mexico. I'd be for ditching it and getting an EVGA or Gigibite board. Although ASUS has improved its quality a bit, still not sure if I'd trust em or not after my experience with them.
Oh ya, nothing wrong with XP either. But do get Win 7 and an SD drive to boot it from. You'll be so much more please with it than XP especially if you up your memory. (DDR 2 is dead btw.)

Java runs a lot smoother on 64 bit systems, I don't know exactly why but I suspect its the architecture that lets java process faster and more efficiently. Just by looking at your system it seems like you might need to upgrade to a new computer just keep the case, HDD and PSU everything else is aged....
