He was never real. The community just wanted some kind of mascot to represent Minecraft's aspects of mystery and adventure. I know that we all used to believe that he was real, but I think we all just wanted to believe that there was something out there that posed a significant threat or added some horror to the game.

I don't think so. The first ever photo of herobrine was probably a glitch with the texture of the human mob. As for the strange tunnels and trees missing leaves, I think that it was probably a world error. (Which still happens sometimes.)
