Mac:
Go to your User -> Library -> Application Support -> Minecraft
PC:
Go to the start (or bottom left hand corner), search %appdata% , click .minecraft (if it isn't there, there will be another folder. Just open that up and the .minecraft will be in there).
After you find the folder:
Go into your folder, and make a backup of the "saves." The saves folder is where all your worlds are save to. You might want to backup the "stats" folder, too. That is where your achievements are stored. If you want, make a copy of the "screenshots" folder. If you took any screenshots, they are there. There is also a "texturepack" folder which stores all your texturepacks. Go ahead and back that up if you want.
All that is really necessary are the "saves" and "stats" folders.
After that delete your minecraft / .minecraft folder. Open up Minecraft and click Options -> Force Update.
If you haven't bought the game, you won't be able to update it.

This happend to me, just add mineraft as an exeption in firewall, and run it as an administrator

Junkman, make a backup of your save folder and then delete the ENTIRE .minecraft folder. Rerun the application.

Clear you mods folder?

Then something is really wrong if that won't work.

go to options then click force update

delete your .bin folder!! then update it !!
