I think it would increase the effectiveness of pressure plates a lot if there were also normal plates.

They would look exactly the same as their pressure plate counterpart (including the weighted pressure plates).

Crafting Recipe : Maybe: 2 slabs side-by-side = 2 Plates (or 1 or 3 or 4 I don't care much about the actual recipe). Potentially, Plates out of all kinds of materials could exist, but at the very minimum we'd have Smooth Stone, Oak Wood, Iron and Gold (the exact same materials that are used for crafting Pressure Plates and Weighted Pressure Plates).

You could walk on these Plates without them going "click". In fact, they wouldn't generate any redstone signal at all. They'd mainly be used decoratively, but could also be used to "hide" normal Pressure Plates by making let's say an entire floor of Plates, and only one or a few of those Pltes would actually be true Pressure Plates. The best place to hide trees is still in a forest !

However, Mojang doesn't like having 2 blocks using the exact texture for 2 diffeerent blocks. Case in point: grassless Dirt not being available without cheats before Coarse Dirt was added, which changed from the Dirt texture specifically to adress that. But in this case, I think it is warranted because the entire point is to allow Pressure Plates to be easily hidden.

However, ways to differentiate Plate vs Pressure Plate are still pretty much needed.

Visually :

Maybe wearing a Pumpkin on your head could make the player able to see finer details, and thus Pressure Plates would look slightly different then.

And/or maybe we could have a new Helmet Enchantment that reveals trapped items slightly more easily.

In any case, It shouldn't work by actually swapping the texture or make things too easy to see. Maybe any "trapped" block would, if looked straight at it and from within hand reach, have a dark-red outline box around it, instead o a totaly black one.

Whatever, as long as not all players can use it instantly and all the time.

The same method(s) could also make trapped Chest more plainly visible in the same way.

On stepping:

Sneaking could prevent triggering a trap. Just like trying to move forward down a cliff (or even a single 1 block drop) is impossible in sneak mode, you simply could not move onto a Pressure plate while sneaking.

Why not just use pressure plates that aren't connected to anything?
