he was on creative mode so he could spawn tons on 1 floating block then break it which makes the chicken explode all over the place

i had this "raining chickens" that explodes (no damage ore anything but an explosion texture and chickens dissapear) when they hit the land
it happened to me at dec.24 so i think it is natural. or maybe because our minecraft is modded... but still its just pure annoying

I don't know which mod but one of them that is in the direwolf20 ftb pack made chickens rain from the sky. It doesn't look like you have the direwolf20 pack but you may have tha particular mod

i have the obsidian++ mod and that has nothing to do with this why would a tools mod do that and i haven't even heard on direwolf20's mod pack well t was on 24 dec so maybe its a christmas thing because chests were presents not chests so yeah its over now and i didn't have a mod to do that

I am pretty sure that you're using a Mod. Ask the Mod's developer if that is supposed to happen? If not, that's a glitch.

Maybe the chickens were on a mountain that wasn't generated yet. Mobs look like they are floating when they are standing on unloaded chunks.
