infinite storage(infinite worlds), 100% up time, dont have to worry about RAM or anything running out, more secure than some hosts and most important:
You help the company that made the entire thing
So yes.... its totally worth it

They will limit your resources as they sell more, it's obvious, I wouldn't say they will be 100% uptime forever also...

DEFINATLY KEEP UR OWN SERVER!
Realms are a terrible idea. their insanely expensive, and theres wonderfull hosts for only 10% of that price

It is, if you are planning to just have a small server with your friends.
REALMS WAS NEVER MADE FOR BIG UNORIGINAL NETWORKS!
Again, it is made for 4-5 players. It has 24/7 uptime too. 100% uptime. Unless something is wrong with the Mojang Account thingies.

Realms are a waste of money, they limit your slot count, what you can use on the server, and they will have low uptime too (most likely) A lot of hosts have high uptime, quite affordable, and don't limit the slot count, such as mine for example, I think Fragnet and MPServ also do this.

I feel iffy about the whole Realms thing. I feel like it's yet another thing to split up the minecraft community.

Not yet, but it's in early stages.

Personally, I think that they are a waste of money, since I have bought one for 30 days to try it out.
First of all, it's only vanilla and you cannot upload your own world to it. This means no plugins or mods, at all. Next, you're paying £8 for a 10 slot server, but the slots aren't ever going to be full, because you can only whitelist 20 players. I can buy a server like that from -insert hosting company here- for less, get Bukkit or Forge and make it public.
There are vanilla mini games, which are actually quite fun, but once again, you can get those with a normal server host.
The only reasons why I would want to keep my Minecraft Realm is because looks more fancy than a server on the Minecraft GUI and is pretty reliable. If you have absolutely no experience with servers and don't intend to get any, I would consider buying a realm, but for everyone else, a server is certainly more worthwhile.

I think this is the answer you're looking for, great explanation.

Are realms only vanilla? Or can I install plugins there too?
I heard something about minigames?

Nope only vanilla
You can switch world to a mini-game without deleting your world.

Isn't buying a ''real'' bukkit server cheaper?

I spent £21 or 26 euros on realms this morning. List of pros/cons
PROS
Can play minigames without losing your map
Can build and play with friends without self hosting or using LAN
Private so only you and your friends can join
CONS
Not a wide range of minigames
Only vanilla minecraft. No bukkit
No map uploading

I think that they should be free. If it was, it'd get much more attention. But then again, Mojang's servers would be crashing.
I prefer the servers though.
