Rotating in Minecraft Vanilla?

I'm building a new adventure map and I often use /setblock to put out certain blocks that otherwise can't be added without being connected to a block, such as ladders. However. I really need to rotate some blocks because they always spawn in the same direction, is that possible?

use metadata, for example /setblock ~ ~ ~ ladder 2 means facing south but /setblock ~ ~ ~ ladder 3 facing north.
Here is a list:
0: ground
1: sky
2:south
3:north
4:east
5:west
Here is a list:
0: ground
1: sky
2:south
3:north
4:east
5:west

Haha. I don't know what that means, but I guessed and it started rotating. Thanks for your help
