The lore of the Illagers

The lore of the Illagers was introduced in 2019 in Minecraft update 1.14, the Village and Pillage update. Then in 2020 Minecraft Dungeons came out. Dungeons gave us plenty of ideas on Illager culture and history. And then Legends was added to the Minecraft franchise. Up to this point, lore theriosts thought that Illagers eveolved from Villagers (My own species, LOL) in some way.
But Legends introduced the official Mojang idea that Illagers were just Villagers that took up arms to fight the Piglin empire. And so the lore history goes like this:
Legends- Dungeons- Vanilla Minecraft
This means the Illagers emerged in Legends, built an empire in Dungeons and just became the enemy race of the Villagers in Vanilla.

illagers and pillagers are villagers that chose to be against the existing rules, creating their own ideology. Take that witches are villagers that get electrocuted and get magic, which makes them hostile towards golems(they will be killed), similar could be with evokers as they also got into some accidents
Im glad you think that Dungeons comes BEFORE the base game. So many people think it comes after the base game as some sort of future game, but that is, in my opinion, quite incorrect.
