We're Not Getting the Creative Tools We Really REALLY Need

In some of my past posts, I was pretty upset about the overhauls made to the resource pack & data pack system with each new update. Having to fix old packs for newer versions just because of some stupid folder renames, newly imposed file path rules, or a major rewrite to the data or JSON of command formatting.

It's still true, these changes throw pack creators into absolute hell with their content management, especially with the rapid rate at which these changes happen thanks to the new "game drop" schedule Mojang's using. Thankfully, some of these changes and additions have been very welcome ones: near complete item customizability, custom enchantments, custom data tags for all entities, and--as of snapshot 25w20a--the ability to create custom menus with the new dialog feature. This last one in particular has gotten many people excited, and there's already some interesting things being made with dialogs.

All of these features may have been receiving too much hype, however. Yes, technically we can achieve right-click detection by giving items food-related components, but it's not real right-click detection, is it? We can make crafting recipes with custom, component-driven outputs, but not recipes with component driven ingredients. The dialogs are impressive and all, but the only type of menu you can make with them is a pause menu, not a GUI for a block or mob with item slots and everything, and who knows how long it'll be before we get that?

At this point, I don't care as much about the hassle of updating packs when I know about all the expanding possibilities each update brings. BUT, if the new tools only work to some degree and are literally just lesser alternatives to something we really need, then are these features really worth it? What good is the "consumable" data component when you STILL can't detect right-clicks for an unmodified item, or right-clicking without an item at all?? What good is it to have component-driven recipe outputs when you can't even put component-driven items into a recipe??

Mojang is just half-assing all of these "quality of life" additions. They'll give us some useful ways to customize the game, sure. But it's clear that they don't want us to have anything as powerful and versatile as real right-click detection. They have the nerve to add incomplete mapmaking tools to the game. It's not too different from how badly Add-ons have been managed on Bedrock Edition, and it's even the same level of poor effort as the bland main game features we've been getting. Mojang is just done with trying anymore. They won't add what should be added to vanilla Minecraft, and they won't give the creative side of the community the right customization tools. If we ever do get what's really missing, it would likely take at least another decade of drudgery and unimaginative updates.

But – if mod makers were able to do everything the MS/Mj devs can (directly and without any hoop-jumping or jiggery-poo), what need would we then have of them?

[For those who've invested in too many levels of Dodge Clewsick, that's heavy sarcasm. 🙄 ]
