Digging straight down and falling into a ravine.
2
that, or it was digging straight up and getting destroyed by lava/falling sand, or gravel.

And on respawning discover that your spawn site got swarmed with mobs which kill you a second time. :(

Not knowing anything about crafting recipes xD
I only knew how to make a workbench and it was my entire pride.
But the problem solved itself when I found the all-knowing Minecraft Wiki.

If I can remember correctly, it was just before the weather update. I was paranoid, convinced my base was going to flood, so I spent about an hour building canals to divert water... only to discover when it came out, that rain didn't spawn anything xD

My first house back in beta 1.7 was a dirt house with a trap door cause that's the only thing i could figure out how to craft at the time.
3
I recognize it, especially the dirt house part. :)

Before I played Minecraft, I watched lots of YouTube let's plays. Also read the MINECRAFT ESSENTIAL HANDBOOK
it was hard to make mistakes, but I did accidentally set myself and house on fire with a flint and steel.

Sadly I don't remember my first time playing Minecraft, Though I did watch a friend play before I started.
So I knew the creepers and other mobs. So maybe spending to much time gathering recourses?

My first death was because I thought I could totally beat an Enderman with my stone sword and partial iron armor, but I think the biggest mistake I made in that world as not realizing you had to dig down for ores. I never even realized I had done this, but when I loaded back up the world years later I realized that I had literally only dug like 10-15 blocks under the surface and then just made a massive 3x3 strip mine that went on forever. No clue why I didn't realize you had to dig down. I did have plenty of Iron and Coal though lol

Using creative mode to replace lost items for the first time. Once you decide to use creative mode in a survival world to "regather" lost items (due to death), it takes away the joy of the survival experience. It's nearly impossible to get back into the mindset of the survival experience knowing that it isn't completely genuine, nor is it easy knowing that that option is ready to be used whenever you want.

I didn't notice the bubble counter and drowned.

Being too busy looking at something or building and digging away and not paying enough attention to that hissing sound right behind me... BOOM!

Spent two hours searching for penguins because I saw them in a video, and didn't know about mods

Running straight into a group of spiders, creepers, skeletons, and zombies to avoid zombies.
In case you're wondering, I died.

I searched imediatly for food, but only saw sheeps. Because I was on MC 1.5, Sheeps didn't dropped mutton at the time, but I was so convinced that you could have meat with this animal, that I ended up mistaking a zombie and a "rArE gReEn ShEeP". When I realised it was attacking me, I instanly panicked and quit the game.
The next day, I oppened the game and as soon as I loaded in, I left the computer like 30 secs.
I sometimes wonder why I thought why did I thinked that the zombie would leave overnight

spent the whole minecraft day gathering wood. didn't know you need to hold the left mouse button to break wood logs.......

I said a bad word by accident and god banned instantly

On my first world, I made the mistake of fighting a creeper using a melee weapon (was a wooden sword)
I ended up getting blown up.
I learned from that, and now I do not go after any monster until I have an iron sword.

I didn't know how to craft...so I dug a mound in a hill and died by skeleton/zombie invasion the first night while trying to fight my way out using one of the axes from the starter chest.

Being too afraid of the mobs and dying to get involved in more adventurous exploration early on.

Built a treehouse on the tallest tree in the middle of the jungle where there's little resources, creepers blows up my only entrance/exit every morning and I can't tell time when looking for resource because the jungle is so dark it block the sun. I don't remember how my house got destroyed. It's either lightning came to say hi or was it me using flint n steel for the first time.

Creepers are my nemesis! I've lost countless homes, lives, not to mention the enormous holes everywhere.
P983 and I are gonna do a short video: "Invasion of the Giant Creepers: Digger's Nightmare" using his giant creeper's surprise

Something familiar with my first house, but in my case it was my first contact with TNT, sadly not only my home but also me were gone. :(
2
Craft hundreds of bottles while hoping they would mysteriously turn into potions while I was filling them with water
2
I made a diamond axe instead of a diamond pickaxe with my last three diamonds.
2
Walked around with no armour or weapon at night...
2
summoning a whole ton of endermen

What do you guys mean!?
Way back in alpha I was so freaking scared of creepers I was playing the now popular stoneblock! Around minecraft-day 100 or so I carefully entered a cave the first time. Must have been around 400 days in when I started building a huge cobblestone wall, 5 blocks wide and ATLEAST 20 high. Nice cobble only base with very high balconies. And probably 1000 days in when I first set foot outside of my wall, mind you after 3/4ths had already past because of me waiting for everything to burn in the sunlight. Take that, I never died!

Going trump style with spiders... I didn't get enough wood to finish a roof so I just kept making cobble walls around me when I tried to run to get wood... Oh and that time in the demo world when they added slimeblocks. Tried bouncing but failed... XD

Placing two blocks of sand above me, suffocating myself...
It was when Notch first added sand to Minecraft, and I was making a house.

The first time I played Minecraft was at a birthday party where we did a treasure hunt on a server, and IIRC the first thing I did was get killed by cactus, and then later I lost the other people while trying to follow a compass across an ocean and got sidetracked mining ores in a cave, and then had to be teleported to the other people to catch up with them.
