If you want better graphics, get a better graphics card. Minecraft is a HD game, your computer mustn't. OR. OOOOR. Download a HD TP. Dokucraft is quite good.

Well you can get a texture pack that is above the default resolution. Not only that, but what you call lag is either created by the computer you have or you tolerance over lag.

The only way you can have a less laggy game is from a better internet connction, and better graphics? that's what texture packs are for . But Furniture i kinda agree on!

Or on DirectX 6-9

I heard there's games like Blockland which I guess? Runs on OpenAL..
Which is already running with MC as the Sound Engine?
But it would also be great if the whole visuals and world loading would run on that..
Instead of the ultra ram eating Java, which uses too much unnecessary processing.
I know it would take ALOT of Time to rewrite it to run on that, and also would cause Minecraft not just to Download Jar, resources (sounds) as the main things..
But if for an example it runs on Pure OpenGL, it would use tons of Models, which wouldn't be contained in a Jar, Zip, Rar or whatever compressed archive - unless there IS a Chance.
But it would all be thrown in they're own folders, and I guess custom Texture packs would be 75% harder to make, as every model or texture would not be contained in 1 file just like in terrain.png - there's more than just 1 block texture.
Really wish there's a way to keep the same texture pack method, if it runs on a different renderer, and if it's ever going to happen!

Use a texture pack for "better graphics". They can make better graphics but Minecraft is meant to have these graphics now.

Lag, can be your computer. So the problem may simply be your computer. The game is supposed to be made of pixels, so better graphics doesn't make any sense. Sorry to criticize if you took offense.

Well is the game and your computers...Minecraft was coded into the worst coders's nightmare...Java. But I still get 100 fps and run 32 by 32 texture packs so you might want to get a better computer to play Minecraft.

The only one I agree with here is less laggy for people with laptops our older/not good enough computers. Better graphics? No. The graphics are fine the way they are. The 16x16 graphics are what make minecraft minecraft. and furniture? More useless garbage? nah, we can build furniture using the blocks that are already there. Minecraft is about being creative with what you have, not having everything handed to you. Also, if your game is laggy, you might want to try OptiFine if you haven't already. Don't drastically lower the settings, just the ones you don't notice that much (ex. for me, it's water animations... they are basically useless in my opinion. Nice, but when I have the option to turn them off, im all in...)

Are you sure the lag isn't just your computer? mine handles it at 500 fps Full Render distance and settings and a 212x212 tp on?

The last two mostly contradict themselves actually... Firstly, the graphics of minecraft are mostly because that is what makes minecraft, minecraft. However, if you were to make the graphics better, you would most likely find that it would get more laggy. While developers can generally make it more streamlined, it would still get more complicated to do so. I am no tech genius, but from what I know, it would not be that easy.

less lag isn't really very possible due to java limitations. If you're lagging a lot then it's probably time for a new computer. Although I would like some furniture

I Must say, less laggy game really depends on your computer. Not much of the game, better graphics is why we have texture packs.
