So far in the coming 1.3 update....

-Added a second golden apple made with gold blocks, has amazing effects.
-Added a new pyramids, spawns in deserts
-Added extremely rare emerald ore(makes diamonds look as common as dirt)
-Added emerald, used for trading.
-Added a trading system! Currency is emerald. You can also get emerald by trading with villagers
-Added cocoa plants to jungle trees,
-Sandstone Stairs
-Blocks have proper names, e.g. Oak Wood Planks
-New slabs for each wood type (birch, jungle...)
-Silk touch can be used on glass and ice again
-Large biomes world type
-Fixed the mobs being glitched through walls in SMP
-You can burn wooden tools as fuel now
-Dispensers now place boats and minecarts, lava, and water!
-Thrown items (press q) on the ground stack together to prevent lag
-Villagers from spawning eggs have a random job
-Cocoa beans have new texture
-Wood slabs are now like wood, not stone.
-Shift-clicking for brewing stands
-Shift-clicking for armor
-Creative inventory is now organized, with new tabs and search system
-Pick block for creative mode
-Ender chests! Made with obsidian and ender pearls, you can store items with an ender chest and access it with another ender chest far away!
-Single player are now servers Dam you jeb
-Cheat mode in SSP
-Option when creating world for bonus chest, which contains useful stuff to help you in your new world.
-Empty buckets stack to 16 now
-Hardcore SMP!

-Mining all ores besides iron and gold, smelting something in a furnace, and earning achievements gains you experience (a bit OP in my opinion, got to level 113 in less than an hour!)
-Rain slowly fills cauldrons.
-Nether portals have an extremely rare chance to spawn a zombie pigman
-Server commands changed
-Priests can offer to enchant your items (via trading)
-Kicking people crashes their client
-Boats are faster

Well, I'm not really interested in anything except the Creative update, and the the half steps being able to be placed on the top of a block easier. I don't play Survival much but this seems like a pretty cool update.

I'd just like to correct something. Emeralds DO NOT make diamonds look as common as dirt. They can only be found in extreme hills biomes. And in those Biomes they are actually not hard to find.

They spawn about the same layer as diamond and are much rarer than diamond. Sooooooo yeah they do.

I think everything sounds GREAT!!!!!!!!!! Ender chest = one in end one in normal world and one in nether

I think each of the new updates have been fantastic, Jeb certainly knows how to add fun & functional objects into the game.
I'm not so sure about the single player server idea, simply for the fact that it means the single player commands update may take longer than usual to update.
As for writable books; they're a brilliant idea, and will be perfect for adventure maps, the same applies for villagers and the trading function they will have.

I'm surprised nobody else is happy about this! I've never been much of a farmer in minecraft, so now I have something to do with wooden hoes.

That's cool, I guess it will work like signs. Hopefully they will soon make signs keep what is written when you take the sign.

Single player will still be exactly the same, the background code will have changed. You can choose to invite friends into your single player as if it were a server, but if you don't chose to do this it'll just be a regular single player world anyway.
Servers are NOT fine the way they are at all; they're buggy, unwieldy, far too CPU intensive for what's being run, and have a thousand ways they could be improved. This is the first step to fixing some of those problems.

Incorrect, we believe there's a new feature that enables you to invite people to your single player worlds. I see no evidence of this in the 1.3 snapshot but, the other listed features are true so I suppose this will be also. Singleplayer will never disappear, the majority of Minecraft players play singleplayer. The only difference is that you can invite people to your singleplayer worlds and convert it to multiplayer. (From what we know so far)
I guess we will have to wait and see to be sure!

In my opinion, this will be a generally good update. The only thing I'm not happy about is the texture change for gravel. As a Minecraft veteran, I'm sick of changes to old content like music, textures and how the game is played (like the hunger bar).

The modding API will mean that all mods will now be able to work in the same way, both SSP and SMP. They'll all (hopefully) work in a similar way to how Bukkit works now, but with much more power and the ability to do far more impressive stuff

It basically means that your singleplayer worlds can be hosted on a multiplayer server from within minecraft without creating a server and moving around world files and editing config files. In essence it is used to easily turn your single player world into a multiplayer game that you can invite a friend to join.

Something like that. Probably private so you have to be invited to join one.

I really like how villages can level up! The more you trade with one villager, the higher level he will get, and he will be able to sell more items! So sweet
