I always go but don't really go for the staff. I usually want to see what their spawn looks like and if it's actually worth playing on.

Now the real question is though... How do you keep your current staff working hard?

Make sure your staff understand how much they do to help the server. Beyond that offer them incentives, on my server I give back 10% of the total monthly donations to my staff in the form of a coupon towards the Donation Center. Small way to say thank you for all the work they do.

in real life you have to work to become a good staff member.
I guess in minecraft you can just goof off and ban whoever without knowing the consequences, because these consequences unfortunately don't exist in the online world.

The fact that this has happened so often has caused it too be a norm among the MC community. I'm not surprised.

As J3T(One of my Moderators) said, this is very accurate. I've had this happen way too many times on my server...

This is 100% accurate. Honestly people who come walking in wanting staff are at quite a low point.

People need to understand that a staff position is about service not for your personal self-enrichment, fun, and power. I am amazed by how many people ask for staff...and cuss you out the minute you say no. What the heck?

This is a very good point. I hound my moderators and admins maybe a bit too much when it comes to using creative and what not for personal gain. Its become a bit of an epidemic with players wanting the position for personal reasons, but that is what comes with a younger community.

The only way I recommend giving people staff functions is if they have applied on your website or another forum. Start by giving them only basic permissions (moderating chat, muting people and making banreports of player for you to be reviewed), and make sure that it is possible for players to contact you directly or use your website/forum to report abuse of powers. Then use your common sense to judge if they're ready for more responsibility.

or they wanted to do that hacked book data thing and get the owner deoped and wanted to put a kill circuit (a cmd with /kill @e connected to a 20 pulse per second loop) and make the server have to reset

they didnt say which version it is and also that player may not have known this about it either so imagine different possibilitys not just that it has to be one way

I found it best to only give staff to players who actually come and play on the server not players who expect it on day 1
