What kind of question is this
1
I know I'm not a nice person, but I find it funny that you ask why people are obsessed with diamonds, and then having a diamond_block as a picture :p
Anyway, to answer your question:
On PvP servers, it's pretty much because diamond is the strongest, but! If you weren't able to enchant diamonds, then Iron would be the best simply because it has a higher damage.
I think that's why, because when you look at Creative builders they never use the Diamond Block, unless they're building something for a server. Otherwise I think most builders will go for everything else but Diamonds.
1
because they're edgy 9 year olds that think it's cool to mention diamond in your username, profile picture, and badly done mcpe youtube banner because it's the strongest thing in the game
and before you kids that names are "DiamondGamingKingMCPE" flame on me, you guys asked for the answer

It's completely possible to finish the game without getting any diamonds at all. Harder, but still possible.
1
Because they are rare and are strong resources for making armor, weapons, and tools. Other then that, it's just fan-fair. Just like diamonds in real life. They aren't really rare in real life, and they are used a lot more often, but for the average person who orders a cut diamond, it's almost just for looks.

^ the answer is right there.

I was about to elaborate upon Planet Minecraft's diamond (system), but okey.
I will, however, use some of the previous posters' comments as basis for my statements.
Lola said, "Diamonds are rewards for the hard work and effort..." Removing the further part, they are indeed rewards for hard work and effort. After all, they are one of the most difficult elements to find in Minecraft, aside from a few. They are basically at the same level of hard-work as Nether Fortresses or End Portals.
Diamonds are the ingredients needed to possess the strongest tools and armour in the game; tools and armor that can withstand well over 1000 hits without any unbreaking enchantments.
Diamonds' bright blue shine and distinct color set it apart from the other materials in the game. A diamond-fitted player stands out a lot greater than an iron one.
Diamonds are hard to find. With their presence only being in levels 5-12, most prominently in levels 8-12.
With all of that being said, emeralds are some of the most underrated gems in the game xD

It's kinda of a like system except it's physically impossible to dislike a submission on this site.

Dude, chill. Everybody made a mistake. And it was an easy mistake to make. So just calm downnn
1
Diamonds are people's way of saying, "great job" or "wanna see more of it!"
Diamonds are just to tell people that you like their submission.
Hope this helped!

The "Diamond" is a positive opinion about your content, obviously, Normal people like positive opinions.
Hope that helped your question

It can be for several different reasons. Some people simply want others to like their content, while others truly think that fake internet points amount to something.
1
They do ._.
1
its the same as people who are obsessed with likes and subscriptions on youtube etc, the option is there so people think they should have them, its simple greed, "if other people get it i want it"
1
Diamonds are rewards for the hard work and effort people put into their submissions. The more diamonds you get, the better your content is and the higher regarded you are, that's how it's supposed to work to some. Some people will think they're entitled to get diamonds and will do anything to get their "well deserved" rewards, as to them it means they're the best or they think making good content is the only way to become respected. If they don't get the diamonds they think they deserve they will start asking for them, and trying to get them by any means possible, whether their content is good or not.
(my theory, from what i've learned at uni, might be flawed. I don't mean to say everyone thinks like that. hope it answered your question)
tl;dr people make stuff and expect others to praise them, regardless of the quality of their content through diamonds because diamonds means fame

Really? Actually this is only partially true. Turns out hard work and effort end up being the least viewed. The people who work smirtly get rewarded. Along with this, the amount of subscribers matters. Plus, it's like youtube; quality sin't rewarded; quantity is. Sirry to put a dent into that view. Oh well. :I Darn, now I sound like those kids who think everyone is naive and the government is evil and everything. Dern it.

Must be the same reason why you have a diamond profile pic.
