Why do some people still play on 1.12???
It's been like, what, 4 years? Since 1.12 was released and then succeeded by 1.13, and we're now on 1.17.1.
Yet I can't help but notice that a lot of people are still playing on 1.12. Either they publish maps/datapacks that are made in 1.12, or asks if a map/datapack is playable/useable in 1.12.
I just don't get it. What's so enjoyable about 1.12, and what's so detestable about 1.13 and beyond that many people are refusing to update past 1.12?

1.13 introduced major internal changes that broke a lot of mod support, so many mods that were easy to update up to 1.12 would require major rewrites.
1.13 was terribly inefficient compared to 1.12, and the next couple updates weren't much better. It's not soooo bad now, but for a couple versions playing singleplayer on computers that could run 1.12 just fine was painful. I personally stayed on 1.12 for my main worlds until 1.15 came out since the performance started picking back up there and I discovered Phosphorous, Lithium, and Sodium (a set of relatively recent fabric mods that speed up the game much more than optifine).

it has many mods.

cuz 2b2t stuck on 1.12.2 for now + there's still a lot good mods in 1.12

It's because a lot has changed to 1.13 and up. This includes The Flattening (which kind of resulted into reduced performance), weird animations (e.g. new sneaking animation), new font (check my reply in another thread), etc.
In fact, some players even like version 1.8 due to the Combat Update in 1.9, which made some servers, particularly PvP-focused servers, to stay in 1.8. That version has been around since 2014 (7 years ago, as of writing).

But in all seriousness 1.12 is good since it is late/established enough to have a large server/modding community along content which benefits the game like combat features, the ability to have tons of command tools, and redstone contraptions. It also has some nice large servers.
1.13 removes the testfors which I use. Also a small thing is I'm a traditionalist who dislike the new water textures.
I mean personally I think 1.13 is fine but there aren't may good mods that are 1.13 AND can be used together.
I dislike the 1.14 ai pillager raids.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/f4ftyk/does_anyone_else_hate_pillagers/
There is a whole reddit page dedicated to the various issues.
1.15 adds bees. The mechanic feels kinda add on and tacky. There is another reddit with some people commenting on various issues.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/cvohhk/i_hate_the_proposed_bee_and_i_think_its_terrible/
1.16 adds better nether which I like because the nether before then was pretty dull. However there are already plenty of 1.12 mods that change the nether or add other dimensions.
I've not tried 1.17 yet but if I do then I can give my review here.
Fundamentally the big reason is servers. I just already have established a home in some 1.12 servers.

1.13 revolutionised testfor and made it able to detect much more cases
testfor @e[x=0,y=64,z=0,r=20,type=zombie] can be done using /execute if entity @e[x=0,y=64,z=0,r=20,type=zombie].
Not to mention the obviously glaring flaw than you need to detect the success it outputs via redstone back then, where as nowadays you can store the success of it in a scoreboard
Additionally the 1.14 reddit post implies that the idea is good, although executed poorly and that's what they're griping about. Not that the pillagers were a bad idea, just that they needed to be more fair and less present

True. In regards to the execute command I did not know that lol.
As for the pillagers I do agree with the conclusion that ai raids can be fun I just think personally they should be less common and scale with equipment.

The answer will be, mods:
The 1.12 has the best vastness of mods, addons and data packages. Just look at them and you will understand, why this version of Minecraft is so popular. And this why people continue creating maps on 1.12.
Oh, and one more thing.
The command /testfor, /testforblock was removed from 1.13 (because /execute replaced them).
But this commands was so convenient for me (and maybe for everyone, idk).

Testfor was removed, indeed - and replaced with the subcommands of /execute, which are widely considered far superior in every way.
The mods part is absolutely correct though. Unless you want to play Thaumcraft, 1.12 is simply the best version for big modpacks.

Yeah, i know about /execute. I just said, that /testfor was convenient for me. I just dont know, how use /execute xD (i will learn later). Thanks for comment. Have a good time!

"/execute if entity <Selector>" is literally how.
Not that much different from "/testfor <Selector>"

Oh... Alright, now i know how to use this command xD. Thanks very much! Have a good day!

I used to play on 1.12 simply because of the Ice and Fire. Of course now that it's ported I will never go to 1.12 again. I do sometimes use 1.7.10 tho for the LOTR Legacy mod.
4
1.13 had a ton more lag compared to 1.12 so that couldve stopped people from playing 1.13+ forge due to that as well as just more mod content in 1.12
4
its the same with 1.8, there are a lot of differences
2
yeah
3
because there is full of mods for 1.12
3
First: mods
Second: most servers' plugins are 1.12-only plugins.

Mods.
Most mods aren't updated for the latest version.
I sometimes play on 1.7.10 too, for mods as well.

1.12 mods are a thousand times better than now

Ah this reminds me of my video of a rant about update 1.13 ruining mapmaking and commands. Feel free to check it out on my YouTube channel cuz some people might find it too controversial to post here
5
Huh.... I feel like the commands are a LOT better tbh... I can never work with 1.12 and below commands these days.
3
Indeed. 1.12 commands were nonsensical. 1.13 commands are so much more powerful.

I believe that 1.12 is a good version to play for mods and modding. A lot of original/larger mods were initially created in 1.12, and that makes it worth playing, IF you enjoy older mods. That being said, I myself usually play on 1.16.5 or the newer 1.17's, mostly because I'm primarily a builder, and there's a lot more blocks to choose from in newer versions.
3
youre right so i sub to you
2
Many people play it because a lot of mods are made for and only work on 1.12, and the same goes fir servers.
2
From my perspective, the reason is servers. Many servers can't update because the versions 1.13-1.15 are completely unplayable for large servers. I play on 2b2t, and its more likely that it will update from 1.12 in the next 4 years than it would have been for the last 4 years, and there has been plenty of testing, but I really won't hold my breath for any final results.
2
1.12 has the most mods, classic ones like Mutant Creatures and newer ones as well. It was also one of the last versions with that empty, but charming feel of older minecraft imo
2
because of historic mods like the localized weather mod
2
Some guys who like mods thinks it is a stablest versions, but is really outdated

Hi. My name is User3323932G. I'll explain to you why some people are still playing in version 1.12. I think version 1.12 is great!
Some people don't like the new versions of Minecraft, so they play old version (1.12).
Parrots were added to 1.12!
Some are not ready to say goodbye to this version. Version 1.12 was an important event in the life of Minecraft!
Most people only said mods in this version, but in 1.12 version of Minecraft I see something more important than mods.

What what do you see that is more important than mods.
What features make those players play 1.12 than 1.13+ other than lag?
In terms of maps, 1.13+ revolutionised mapmaking and basically skyrocketed the potential you could do

This is the history of Minecraft! I feel as if 1.12 came out yesterday, but now there is already 1.17!
