Can I add a text down arrow to vanilla signs?

To indicate the chest etc. is above the sign I can use ^ but is there anything to indicate it's below besides "(below)"? For organising storage.

Small letter v is what I always use, as lsz already said.
You could also consider using a magenta glazed terracotta block. So if you have magenta stained hardened clay ('terracotta') then cook it and you'll get a 'pattern block' (it's what I call those) and the magenta one uses arrows.
